Re: Why do people want…
I would like to give UAE a try in all honesty. it would make religious ocassions and eating out a lot more fun. lets see how long that can keep me going.
Re: Why do people want...
It's not about Dubai having everything as in other places. The availability of expensive restaurants and hotels and cinemas and other lifestyle-related attributes does not decide a country's worth for a permanent move. I grew up in the Middle East but my parents moved us to Canada because of, primarily, better health care. We had experienced a medical crisis in the family and most telling was when the doctors told us to move to England for treatment, not Dubai. I don't know what the picture is now, but I doubt it has been much approved and at par with the West. Actually, what I have heard about Dubai's medical care system has more to do with plastic surgery than any real medical problems.
There is also a huge problem with education. Education is not merely teaching, it's research, libraries, scholarships, good faculty. Dubai does not match the West in that regard and I doubt it will ever attract world-class professors and researchers simply by building hideously expensive hotels.
I visited Dubai recently and I did not like it. I found it gauche and superficial. There is more to entertainment than the mall; Dubai has become a total consumer society with no depth. There is no triumph of history, little that is architectural to admire aside from the skyscrapers, little to speak of in terms of arts such as the opera and museums and art galleries.
Though I moved from the Middle East because of my parents' decision, I stay in the West because I like the weather, the education, the beauty. Dubai cannot help being a desert of course but that is one of my biggest reasons for not wanting to ever move there. The country is dry in every way.
Re: Why do people want...
well its your viewpoint but as a tourist u cannot experiance all that dubai and uae has to offer:)
Re: Why do people want...
existentialist, i think i share most of the same thoughts, u stated them very well.
Re: Why do people want...
That makes a whole lot of sense existantialist, hmmm.
Re: Why do people want...
she was talkign about ppl moving from
dubai > us/uk/canada
not from
pakistan > us/uk/canada
Oops, my bad. :D
Re: Why do people want...
well technically dubai has a dictator too, and ppl were leaving in the 80s due to the issue with the rights being accorded to non arabs, so even though u were wrong, u were right.
Re: Why do people want…
uncle who is this for, na sara hai na pari:confused:
Re: Why do people want...
We tried it out for awhile, but it just did not make sense to stay. There was much less stability that we had in the US, and an underlying racism that we have never experienced here. Add to that superior educational facilities, and it just did not make sense to extend our contracts.
I agree with existentialist - there was a real lack of the things to do that my family enjoys - how much time can a person spend at the mall, and the materialism that is so prevalent there is not a quality we wanted our children acquiring (no pun intended).
Re: Why do people want...

Re: Why do people want...
cause we are sick of ninjas in our country telling us how to live and think.
I am glad to see your feelings about a dress code that Allah's messengers wives and our mothers wore. Good job. You should be a really proud of yourself.
Re: Why do people want...
I imagine because one can eventually get a residence visa here, which means very few restrictions. Change job at any time, start a business, go to any university one wants to, buy/sell/rent any property one can afford, and no more worrying about renewing job contracts.
That's not to say there aren't challenges in the West.
But a side question....
If you own a house in Dubai (or whatever their complicated ownership type lease is for foreigners), doesn't that give you a resident visa? Once you have that resident visa, doesn't that mean one is no longer bound to their employer's sponsorship and contract?
Re: Why do people want...
In our case, it was almost certainly the insecurity about the future. You give the country your all, and in return, you can’t expect as much as being granted citizenship – ohh, and please DO NOT confuse a residence visa with citizenship. The fact remains that in Arab countries, we’ll remain second class citizens (if not third class).
This isn’t so here in the West where we’re given a fair chance to integrate in the society in every possible way. There’s more security – no stress about bataqa renewals, and more opportunities to pursue independently without being reliant on the local bedous.
That being said, having been brought up in the Emirates (spent a good part of 13 years), I love that place, and some day want to return and give living there another shot.
