In our case, it was almost certainly the insecurity about the future. You give the country your all, and in return, you can’t expect as much as being granted citizenship – ohh, and please DO NOT confuse a residence visa with citizenship. The fact remains that in Arab countries, we’ll remain second class citizens (if not third class).
This isn’t so here in the West where we’re given a fair chance to integrate in the society in every possible way. There’s more security – no stress about bataqa renewals, and more opportunities to pursue independently without being reliant on the local bedous.
That being said, having been brought up in the Emirates (spent a good part of 13 years), I love that place, and some day want to return and give living there another shot.
