Why do people here like to use the term Paki so much?

Re: Why do people here like to use the term Paki so much?

That is funny because all the things racist White people associate with the word "Paki" are generally more true for Indians, e.g. extremely dark skin, strong spicey odor, buddha-spot, sari, pendulum-head, elephant-god (I don't mean to offend anyone but this is what they associated with the word Paki untill very recently).

I have Indian acquiantinces who get really offended when they get called 'Paki' by White people, "Me no Paaki, me no Paaki, me Indian".

It's really funny because it doesn't make any differences to racist White people, when they say Paki they mean South-Asians in general, just like in USA the term "East Indian" is used to describe Pakis as well as Indians.

Re: Why do people here like to use the term Paki so much?

I don’t know what the term nigger literally means or where it comes from, plz spare me it’s irrelevant, I don’t care, I’m not Black..

The term Paki however is obviously short for Pakistani, we can’t run away from it.

When we show that we feel offended by the term ‘Paki’ they wrongly assume we’re feeling offended by being called Pakistani, they think it’s because we want to be British or English or some other weird creature instead, they think we have an inferiority complex which makes them gloat even more…

They don’t realise that it’s the term Paki we have a problem with, and not our identity.

I think it’s most practical and sensible to reclaim, if we show we’re proud of it they’ll stop using it anyway because the last thing they want to do is please us.

There is no way in Hell we can get rid of it, be realistic for once my fellow Pakis.

Re: Why do people here like to use the term Paki so much?

You don't have to be black to realize that term is undeniably offensive.

Call a black man that in England and see what happens, come on I dare ya.

Re: Why do people here like to use the term Paki so much?

i have read several theories for the origin of the word 'paki,' interestingly none of them were that it was a simple shortening of Pakistani. I am not sure exactly which explanation was the correct one so I wont go into that here.

It's strange that you dismiss the similarities to the word 'nigger,' simply because you aren't black. Lots of idiotic whites keep using the n word because blacks use it in songs, films and day to day life. If we keep using the word 'paki' we are giving others a reason to use it.

Recently in America some black people are trying to call a halt to the use of the N word, that's quite an interesting development.

I don't subscribe to the reclaiming a word theory, because if something was intended to be insulting in the first place I don't want to be associated with it, AT ALL. Sadly, I have used this word so I am a bit conflicted on it.

No matter what the 'sticks and stones' saying says, believe me words can hurt you. I always hated being called a 'paki' by Indians, or 'soolah' as they also used. A lot of Indians got beaten up for those words but they just used it in a more sly manner, amongst whites or Indians only.

I'm against violence, though.

It saddens me that Jamaican black people in the UK call us pakis also.

Re: Why do people here like to use the term Paki so much?

Unrealistic..

Ban it all you want, the more taboo/illegal it becomes the more thrill racist people will get from using it.

Do you think these people who hate you and want to insult you will have any regard for laws or your feelings?

Do you not know that we Pakis/Muslims are hated that much that even if we so much as breathe too loudly in this country it makes the headlines in papers like Daily Express and everyone starts barking?

If we complained about the word “Paki” they will simply have another stick to beat us with: "look the mean mean Pakiz/Mozlems want to infringe upon our freedom of speech :crying: ", in this country a man gets thrown in jail for denying the holocaust because it’s anti-semitic (freedom of speech doesn’t matter here) but being anti-Paki/Muslim is fine, and I’m afraid that’s just the way things are, we’ll have to learn to live with it.

Re: Why do people here like to use the term Paki so much?

The n-word has a history. As far as I know "paki" doesn't have any derogatory connotation. People just say "paki" (usually online) because it's shorter.

But, on the other hand, it's been said that the term in some parts of the UK is being used to describe dirty/low-class people or something. ?

Re: Why do people here like to use the term Paki so much?

I know exactly how much we are hated, st, please don’t make presumptions - I’m not a kid, you know.

Although it is unrealistic to completely ban a word, at least that word can be driven underground. For example, Ali G, an act played by Oxbridge educated Jewish comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, used the word ‘paki’ on his show but would NEVER be allowed to use the word ‘nigger.’ That is an example of hypocrisy and I agree with your example of Anti-Jewish sentiments being clamped down on.

Sadly, we Pakistanis have no real power in Western society. We don’t have any figureheads with credibility amongst the white people or their own communities. The few politically involved Pakistanis in the UK are there simply to massage the figures with regards to representation of minorities, most of them just lick their white masters’ boots. I could give specific examples but this is not the time or the place.

I hate the word, am against Pakistanis using it, and if black Americans are willing to try and stop usage of the N word, that is a good example for us to follow. Again, I know a word can never truly be banished from society, BUT it would be good if they (meaning whites and blacks including Indians) never had the cheek to use it publicly again- just in the privacy of their own homes.

Re: Why do people here like to use the term Paki so much?

It does have a derogatory connotation in the UK and always has done.

Also, it must be seen as an insult to some in America, otherwise why were American born Pakistanis upset when George Bush referred to us as 'Pakis.'?

Re: Why do people here like to use the term Paki so much?

What is the origion of this world?
Why did the word 'Paki' = dirty south asian?

There's got to be a reason? Why did not a word 'Indi" come up, instead of Paki.
I know only in the UK this means derogotery, not anywhere else in the world.

Re: Why do people here like to use the term Paki so much?

yup…same here

ima pakii! :dhimpak:

Re: Why do people here like to use the term Paki so much?

Nah. Non-Pakis here don't really use the term. I think people are just sensitive for no reason sometimes.

Re: Why do people here like to use the term Paki so much?

Why don't you share with us bro?

I doubt any of the people who use the term know about those theories but share them anyway.

I still think the best approach is just to embrace the term, I always thought it's just short for Pakistani, a lot of the white kids at school said that's how they meant it, they said it's about as racist as Brit instead of British.

Re: Why do people here like to use the term Paki so much?

Paki instead of Indi because...

The first significantly large group of South-Asians to migrate to this country enmasse were Pakistanis (Mirpuris).

There were other South-Asians before them but they were the first major group, so it stuck for all South-Asians.

Brits hate anyone foreign, now they hate Polish factory workers and Indian doctors/nurses like they hated us, they still hate us as well but now more for our religion and less for ethnicity.

Re: Why do people here like to use the term Paki so much?

I hate anti-Pak comedy like that.

We are not a joke.

People can laugh with us but not at us.

I'm also against movies like East is East made by that Indian biatch, she should have made it about an Indian family if she thought it was funny. Paki husbands/fathers are not barbarians, Paki girls are not ugly fatties with specs and Paki kids are not confused/ashamed/disillusioned.

Re: Why do people here like to use the term Paki so much?

Honestly, it just looks like a shortened version of the word "Pakistani" and I never knew it was used as a derogatory term. It doesn't sound like the other racist words like "nigger" or "beaner". But now I don't use "Paki"anymore and I take the effort to type the whole word :D....didn't mean to purposefully hurt someone if I did use it before.

Re: Why do people here like to use the term Paki so much?

this sentence is so racist in so many ways. Ok so Pakistanis don't eat curries and use the same spices as Indians or wear saris ok yea sure it's all more true for Indians.
You're saying that Indians don't like to associate with Pakistanis but when quite a few people on here have opened up threads about Indian skin color and so many prejudiced threads regarding Indians, it's kind of hard to tell who is more of a bigot.

when you say these kinds of sentences distancing yourself from other south asians, you're just looking for some arguments and believe me the words "I don't mean to offend anyone" don't really cushion the blow.

Re: Why do people here like to use the term Paki so much?

Ok so the 'spicy odor' bit was a bit out of order, it's no less true about Pakis, but the other 'typically Indian things' things the Goras wrongly associate with Pakis.

Like so many South-Indians get called Paki, Apu out of Simsons gets called Paki, Ganesh gets called a Paki god... I've heard these things myself, yet people don't even know that the likes of Imran Khan are Paki.

Re: Why do people here like to use the term Paki so much?

Bc its never been considered a slur in the US...
