RupayHalwa, a lot of girls that weren't interested in studying or thought they will never want work/a career change their minds after marriage and kids start school. It's a good foundation to build up on later incase they do want to work whether it's just for pleasure or to do something constructive with the extra free time they might have or purely out of need.
Having said that some families do see it as just a status symbol, course a girl with a degree is usually more 'marketable' to potential rishtas than one without. When my Mum was looking around for my brother he liked the look of a girl who worked as a secretary and my Mum said 'no way' purely on that basis..
