Almost everyone here has given some valid input. So here is an angle that I believe is compatible with some of these positions.
First of all:
I believe most women want macho traits in their men when it comes to society, but on the flip side they have to be able to turn into pillows and syrup for their women when in private.
Okay so this is similar to the condition of Ritual 2 written above by navaidishere. However, it differs in that it does not assume the Alpha male position to be complex free also it does not undermine the position of the softer males.
Some people are generally soft with everyone, but only when it gets to very dangerous situations they will behave with valour and bravery. It is not a virtuous trait to impose dominancy on everyone for no reason. Rather it is a higher condition to be serving others with ones own will.
All Alpha males will not be able to control their love and some will truly love their women but will be unable to show their soft sides. It is not a 100% rule that alpha males in true love will be more intense and resemble the nice guys. However, it can be true.
One thing is for sure women are less inclined to 'good looking' guys than men are inclined to 'good looking' women. For men it is more important. Character is more important for women and I agree that those women who are attracted to 'untamed macho-ness' have a certain limit on their perception but on the other hand well educated women who have no worries on a security level will mostly try to delve deeper into the psyche of their men in order to look for the traits of a good person.
