Love is a tool for procreation, it exists cause we, as reasoning and feeling beings, can't exactly go off and mate by scent or what-have-you. We need something more, which is intrepreted as love and has be poetified extensively.
So, in the end, It's just something to get reasoning creatures to succum to their animal instincts and get some! ;)
