why call everyone "DEAR"

Hey…just a quick question…lol

Why do all the Pakistani people I know call everyone “DEAR”

“Hello DEAR how are you”

“Yes DEAR”

Is this like some tradition…reason I ask is some people I know who are not Pakistani…end up taking this the wrong way (as in they are interested in them) LOL

stupid question…I know…but would like to know why!!!

Re: why call everyone “DEAR”

Lol I have noticed this too! Once I thought someone was line maaring me :smack: It’s a freaky habit dear.

Re: why call everyone “DEAR”

LOL thankyou DEARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

But I have even heard the men say it to other men …if men said this in the UK…they would probably get a slap…and think this guy was gay and coming onto them LOLLOLOLOL

Re: why call everyone "DEAR"

my husband used to call me that, vbefore we married, and i thought the same thing, then i saw an email and he was using it to a male friend, its normal for them. now hes been in the uk for 4 years hes stopped syaing it. think he realised himself.

Re: why call everyone “DEAR”

***Oh Dear ! ***:nahi:

Re: why call everyone "DEAR"

Oh my my this is so funny because desi people are so desi and you are not, and you freak out when they are being desi!

One way of explaining this phenomenon could be, when your forefathers migrated from the desi lands to the gora lands, they were ridiculed by the natives (as desis still are today) for saying/doing certain things which were culturally and linguistically inappropriate and out of place. But being into a new culture they didn't know much. It takes time before you adapt to the norms of a new cultural setup and learn the language. The same immigration process that your forefathers followed still happens today, and desis move into non-desi cultures, and now you ridicule them for their cultural and linguistic limitations.

Re: why call everyone "DEAR"

Well I wouldn't know about what's going on in UK, but I was talking about Pakistani guys in Pakistan and some of them here. Also when someone messages you online or something, they HAVE to add dear in. LOL.

Re: why call everyone “DEAR”

I wrote ‘Dear Sir’ to my professor. Was I ‘line maaring’ him? :hmmm:

Re: why call everyone "DEAR"

Re: why call everyone "DEAR"

dear, please don't try to think so much

Re: why call everyone "DEAR"

Please dear...I was only asking a question......I do not find it offensive or anything near to that effect! Its just out of all the cultures etc etc in the world...this is the first case I have heard of people calling each other "dear" including men too men...........as I said...this is a stupid question of mine, and I was just curious as to why!!

Re: why call everyone “DEAR”

No dear… I can never imagine doing that to my dear professor… !!!

Re: why call everyone "DEAR"

I am not sure dear

Re: why call everyone "DEAR"

No Dear , I do not say that to every one.

Re: why call everyone "DEAR"

Weird!!
Do women use "dear" too?
I haven't come across anyone here who says dear in a conversation, just seen it online sometimes.

Re: why call everyone "DEAR"

The Chinese do it a lot as well..

Re: why call everyone “DEAR”

:hmmm: I havnt come across any of that from desis. However the “natives” around here do seem to call everyone “hun”, sweetheart" … which I find annoying (esp in the professional setting).

Re: why call everyone "DEAR"

Oh dear!!!!

Re: why call everyone "DEAR"
