^ there are volumes of literature on the subject. Its a social concept developed by the early agriculturists in the subcontinent that we inherited.

Girls were (and with some jaahil people) still are considered a burden to the parents. Why? Because of dowry/jahez that the parents have to arrange when getting her married. Another reason is the belief that girls will leave their parents' home and go to another home. Whereas a son will stay with his parents and financially support them when they grow old. And yet another reason is that a boy will continue the family name by having children.
This view that boys are more important than girls is so deep-rooted in society.....and has existed from pre-Islamic times. Even European kings would behead their wives for not producing a son because a son was needed to become heir to the throne and also to continue the family lineage. Thankfully Islam elevates the status of women, but unfortunately peole still hold ignorant views.
In today's society, there is a greater focus on independence. And many "only sons" choose to live independently from their parents after marriage. And girls are becoming more educated and independent as well and if need be....can help support their families. Times are changing. Some parents fear having a girl because of the thought that she might get pregnant before marriage. But....while a son can't get pregnant.....he can be responsible for creating a pregnancy. Some believe that girls are more expensive to raise than boys.....this is a subjective matter. A boy and girl are different, there are blessings in each. Parents' love should be unconditional.

^ Exactly Cheegum. And isn't it sad how we ignore the basic teachings of Islam and give top priority to absurd cultural views that have been rejected by our own religion? And this is not the only ridiculous view our desi culture holds....there are other absurd notions as well. And they're all preventing us from progressing forward as a society/nation.

like others have noted its not specific to Pakistan or Muslims. in parts of Indiathe ratio of boys to girls is 125:100. In Chinaits now 119:100. Compared to these Pakistan’s 104:100 is relatively better, showing lower infanticide/gender based abortion rates. However once these girls are born ofcourse they’re not recieved very enthusiastically.
Dowry has a lot to do with it in our culture, as do notions of boys being breadwinners etc.

cuz we r stupid and jaahils and we care alot about wat others think of us we live our lives for others not ourselves and we care about the shaadis of our kids more than other things in the world and we totally suck. we r jst so entangled in the mess of jahaliat and stoopidness that we can not clearly see.

It's not limited to a culture or society....I think people have been giving importance to boys in almost every part of the world in every era.
I personally don't see any harm in longing for a baby boy as long as the parents give the same love and upbringing to their daughters.
Interstingly, many people I've seen treat their girls with more respect and mercy than boys.

Female, as you can see the word "Female" has a male in it, what does it shows? It shows that Women are not perceived as a being in itself. They had been historically perceived from the perspective of male/ man. Even the words human, or man kind express the same point. Which says that, by only talking about men one can talk about whole human race, i.e. the female don't matter. Now how things developed that way?
Answer lies in the history of human race, there is alot material present to explain this, Anthropology is the subject to look into.

I'm talking about Science and the known knowledge here, not religion.
Religion is just a set of beliefs, which you just accept and never doubt. Just by accepting something as true doesn't make it automatically true.

Known Knowledge? If there's known knowledge then there must be something called unknown knowledge and since we have no information about that unknown knowledge, how can we come up with conclusions?
