farhana,
Woman are suposed to cover up to avoid sexual tension interfering with other roles..
This could be done in three ways,,,
Men could cover their eyes...but there was a danger of mutiple injuries by stumbling and falling..:)
Or woman could be covered...
Or develompent of a clearer understanding of human interactions, coupled with channalization of basic desires in an appropriate way, and promoting interaction which would allow the whole person to become more important then just physical body.
Covering up woman takes away the responsibility from everyone else....woman suffers, but i am sure she would be compensated for her sufferings in afterlife.
Thanks for your input Nova, my thoughts are along the same lines.
So, why is it a woman's fault that a man cannot control himself?
I have a friend who's a Bahai and we were having a debate about the progression of Asian women within society.
He basically said that Muslim women who cover up have not progressed. They are following "rules" that were written 1400 years ago....that is not progression. To which I kept saying that it's religon and if you believe in Islam then that goes with the territory.
He basically said that at that time women were blamed for men having "impure" thoughts and the easiest way to deal with it was to make women cover up completely.
Could this be true?????
Are we allowed to question the rules that have been set for us, or do we follow them without asking any questions?
Getting back to the main point.........why is it a womans responsibilty to prevent men from looking at her?
"Are we allowed to question the rules that have been set for us, or do we follow them without asking any questions?"
I will let others ans. this question based on either Islam or their personal views.
However, for myself, and I am as Progressive as one can get, without allowing this Women's Liberation/Independence mumbo jumbo cloud my judgment and/or actions!
my LOVE, Faith, Belief, Devotion, to my Allah is such, that even if I was Allowed to question HIM, I wouldn't......Simple as that....
On more secular lines, do women who stray too far from what Islam has ordained for them, one example,
Dating etc., have to pay a price for that?
YES, Heavily.....
P.S.
Do I cover up, or am I a Hijabi? NO...
But do I think what HE has instructed is wrong or would hinder me any? NO!
It would probably do me more good than anything else!
It has to do with Modesty. I have new posts for you guys. Read them and increase your knowledge and get out of ignorance please. Thanks.
I'm not ignorant.
All I'm doing is asking why something has to be done. Everything in Islam has a reason, being "ignorant" I wanted to know the exact reasons behind it.
Isn't that better than blind faith??
It's definitely better. Sorry If I came across severely from that comment. That was not my intention.
too bad non muslim women convert to Islam due to the reasons of Pardah and other values that Islam has to offer to women.
even from a western point of view if one is allowed to wear what one desires then whats wrong with covering ur body in public? how does that equate to oppression on women? Catholic nuns cover their bodies completely and some even wear a scarf..... no one objects to that or calls that oppression on women.
however after reading the stories about how muslim women are being oppressed by pardah in newspapers and by other western media.... we all like to become blind and put down one of the most precious concepts that Islam has to offer to a woman.
by wearing this western goggles and by reading books by a islam hater joe shmuck some of us really think they have acheived a lot in life. what a bunch a morons.
How quick is everyone to get on the bandwagon of blaming Western portrayal of Muslim women in Hijab. By pointing fingers to the West for one’s own jackassness is pretty laughable.
Those who so criticize West for staring at a Muslim women in Muslim clothes need to ask themselves how would, e.g., a bunch of Pakistani men react to a White Woman walking in shorts and a bra on the streets of Lahore?
By pointing fingers to the West for one’s own jackassness is pretty laughable. <<<
u r the only jackass around here along with any woman who walks nude in public. if u werent then u would explain what work cant be performed by a woman dressed fully in clothes? unless that is u r a stripper or a whore.
women ceo's in america do not have to come to work half nude. same goes for a woman dressed in a hijab. a woman can be an astronaut, a pilot, an engineer and a doctor and take up any profession in the world yet also abide by the dress code Islam prescribes for a woman.
those who do not wear a hijab just look for excuses to put down Islam and following is a perfect example...
Muslim women who cover up have not progressed. They are following "rules" that were written 1400 years ago....that is not progression. To which I kept saying that it's religon and if you believe in Islam then that goes with the territory.<<<<
nyahmadi is a perfect example of what thali ka bengan western media can produce.

The only thing surprising is that Mundyaa reads Western Media. My Dear reading Hustler is not the same as being an authority on Western Media. Whatever happened to the example of a Woman walking in comfortable shorts (in hot summer) in Mecca? Care to shed some light how would she be portrayed in “Eastern” Media? Schmuks like you are a perfect example of what Mullas have done to Pakistan. I will gladly be a whore or a stripper than some jerk telling me what I should wear.

Okay, before my Punjabi turns into Roosi or something else, I better stop!
By the way, keep writing to me in Punjabi, that way I learn...
And OFF the Record....I am a Hajjan bibi...smile
Was only 17 then, but sure noticed the BAD Eyes of the Saudi Biraadars! the Keepers of Kaaba!
I have never felt SO Insecure in any city as I did in Medina, when walking by myself for Fajr...because of again BAD eyes....
And YES, I was at that time, FULLY Hijaabed! One has to for Hajj!
Dehatan, that is sooooo true!!!!
The men there are such perverts, especially the Pakis there.
In August I went for Unmra with my parents and one of my older brothers.
One evening, my brother and I went out to get something to eat. He was walking by my side, and as I walked passed one (old) guy, he looked me up and down and had the gall to say "mash-allah" and he started humming some bollywood tune. How gross. For all he knew my brother could have been my other half, do they have no respect for paraiy aurtain??
And for the record I was covered up.
Which sort of makes no sense. Even after wearing hijaab, why do we have to put up with such derogatory behaviour from men that we don't even know??
Why, why, why???
Farahan before i go into quran and hadith and what they say about women covering up...i just use some examples to show you WHY they should cover up.
As you know mans sexual behavior is at rise when he sees a women. But when he sees a women naked its EVEN MORE intense right? ok now if a women wears shorts and has sexy legs and all...they she wears TIGHT cloths (weather jeans or at top) Clothing of women does effect how man behaves when he is alone with a women(weather he knows her or not).
Most women who get raped wear short skirts with legs showing and most of their uper body showing also.
Is it sinking in..are we getting somewhere?
Mans behavior in front of women is naturally occuring process it is not timed or done on purpose( ithink u all know that) I believe hidden thing always is better than the one that is NOT hidden.>meaning if a women shows off(body, face or any other part) alot man or people will get tired of it after some time but hidden faces or hidden body is more beautifull and healing to eyes than one which is seen by every other person.
I ll post what quran and hadith say about this matter later inshallah.

Here is it…read all…Verse 31 of Surah 24, entitled “Light”, or “An-Noor”, deals specifically with how women should appear in public and which groups of relatives are exempted from the general rule that governs women’s dress. They may reveal their adornment in the presence of their husbands, fathers, fathers-in-law, sons, sons-in-law, brothers, nephews, other women, etc. The same verse includes the order that women “must draw their head-covering which should be of ample length to be used to cover their bosom”, in case her dress is of such style as to reveal a part of her bosom. If her dress or blouse covers her bosom and is not tight, then it is good enough. But that does not mean that a woman does not cover her hair in such a case. Your question is phrased in such a away that it suggests that unless you have a Qur’anic statement giving a specific order, you would not accept the ruling known to everyone in this particular case. As you know, God’s message has been conveyed to us by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the fact that we are Muslims means that we believe in the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as God’s messenger. This is indeed the testimony we make when we declare that we are Muslims, believing that “there is no deity save God, and that Muhammad (peace be upon him) is God’s messenger.” God Himself defines the relationship of total obedience to Him. God says: “Take whatever the messenger gives you and refrain from whatever he forbids you.” (59;7) There are several Hadiths which make it abundantly clear that a woman must cover her head when she goes out in public. If there was no Qur’anic statement to this effect, then these Hadiths are sufficient to make the order an obligation which must be fulfilled.

"Most women who get raped wear short skirts with legs showing and most of their uper body showing also."
Is this a scientific study that you have done here? So there are no rapes of women in Pakistan then?
"Men's behavior in front of women is a naturally occurring process?"
So is rape part of this naturally occurring process, then?
I think that Farhana brings up a good point. The custom of full hijab is really based more on tradition than on the Quran. The Quran specifies that women should cover their breasts and lengthen their garments. I believe that it was left a little vague so that it could really be adapted to all times. Unfortunately, what has happened is that people have used various Hadith, which most agree are questionable, to base these rules on. Let's not forget that the Quran is complete. If God had wanted women to covered up in such a way, don't you think he would have mentioned it in the Quran?

Here is another…
I must admit that the question of whether a Muslim woman should cover her face or not is a thorny one, not because we do not have clear instructions by the Prophet about it, but because people choose to take inflexible stands on it. However, it is not up to any person to impose on another something which Allah has not required of him as a duty. There may be all the right arguments supporting the view that what is advocated by some people is of benefit to the individual and the community. But the fact that Allah has not chosen to make it compulsory means that no one can make it so. Any Muslim who chooses not to do it violates no rule or principle of Islam. Having considered the question of women’s dress in all its aspects and having read all the arguments supporting the view that a woman must cover her face, I can state categorically, without any equivocation, that Muslim women are not required by their religion to cover their faces. That is my clear belief and I can say that this is what I have learned from great and famous scholars, past and contemporary. When we describe the dress of a Muslim woman and outline what is required, we also state clearly that the dress itself must not be eye-catching. The very concept of propriety, which must always be observed by Muslim women, makes it clear that the outfit of a Muslim woman must not be eye-catching. In other words, when she passes by, she should not make other people’s faces turn to look at her. You are confusing this requirement with a woman having an attractive face. It is the simple fact that she cannot do anything about how Allah has created her. If she is attractive she should thank Allah for that. But we do not read anywhere in Islamic teachings that a woman with an attractive face must cover her face. What we read is that a Muslim woman should maintain the normal Islamic standards of propriety. Whether she is attractive or not, the fact that she maintains these standards is sufficient to ensure that she is treated with respect and that people recognize that there is a virtuous woman who implements a profound faith. May I say that there are some women who look more attractive when they cover their head than when they put their head-dress off. Could we say to such women that they should not cover their heads? It is not the attraction which makes the rule. The rule is there to be implemented by all women. They should not take a positive action in order to attract men to look at them. That is what is meant by having a dress which is not eye-catching. But a woman’s face is the one which Allah gave her. She must not wear makeup when she goes out in public so that she does not positively attract the attention of others. Similarly, she does not wear an eye-catching dress. When she has observed the rules, that is all that is required of her. I hope this clarification is satisfactory.

I forgot to add that, although I am not sure how things were among the Arab nomads during the time of the Prophet, in this day and age, most men can resist raping a woman even if he sees her face or her hair. I think that it is time to start following the Quran here, and put some of the responsibility on the men. Why would the Quran even bother to ask men to lower their eyes if women's entire bodies were covered?
