I am really suprised to see that no one knows the history of why there are more pakistanis in UK
In 1967 Mangla Dam was built to strengthen the irrigation system in pakistan. For that the contract was given to a british company. The place they selected was near jehlum and mirpur. They had to evacuate aprox 50,000 people from there make room for the dam. For that almost all of them were given entry to UK. Now in UK, every 2nd or 3rd pakistani you meet would be either from jehlum or mirpur.
The fact that there are more Pakistanis has nothing to do with the Mangla Dam. People in the area were not given entry to the UK because of the dam....besides I don't even think the Dam was built by a British Company but an American company.
People were needed here after the WW2 due to labour shortage and the need to rebuild the country....so Britain invited people from former colonies including Pakistan to come over. The reason that a lot of people from the Mirpur area are here is due to the fact (I heard) that they were in the Merchant Navies and were some of the first people to take advantage of the settling in Britain...and then obviously they called over other members of families etc.
However I thought that in the eighties onwards a majority of Pakistanis were settling in North American and had expected more people to be from there.
...I LIVE IN CANADA n all those pplz u see around arnt all pakis budyy....thyr all different races...hindus....sikhs....bengali...etc.....u can call them desii but u cant call them all pakis....i agree wid im kool...n the info arshad bhai is giving is correct...!!...
