In the UK Pakistanis form 1.3% of the total population i.e 1 in 77 of all British is of Pakistani origin.
In Canada Pakistanis form 0.25% of the total population i.e 1 in 400 of all Canadians is of Pakistani origin.
In the U.S Pakistanis form 0.07% of the total U.S population i.e 1 in 1429 of all Americans is of Pakistani origin.
Re: Pakistani's
See post 14.
The figures are from the respective official government statistics for the year 2000 or 2001.
Re: Pakistani's
well i live in BIRMINGHAM SO yeah its true a lot of the population are muslim.
Re: Pakistani's
Actually, Arshad is right about there only being 200,000 Pakistanis in America (maybe 250,000 maximum) in reality. It seems like a lot more, but it isn't, otherwise we'd be more visible in the US in the government and media, and we're not. Look at it this way: the vast majority of Pakistanis are concentrated in and around the major cities of the US. I know there are about 20,000 in southern california, about the same in northern Cali, 20,000 in Houston, 20,000 in Dallas, 40,000 New York, 20,000 Chicago. Maybe 10,000 in the DC/VA/MD area. Maybe another 10,000 in Boston. You go anywhere else, and there are hardly a few thousand at most (look at Phoenix--it's the 6th largest city in the US, but maybe 3,000 Pakistanis). In rural midwest areas, hardly any (For example, in the Green Bay area of Wisconsin, the masjid there boasts of having 40 children total in their Sunday School. That's forty Muslim, not necessarily desi, children. Meaning what? 20-30 families). Add it all up, and you barely have 200,000.
You can't look at a big crowd on Pakistan day and think "oooh, there are sooooo many Pakistanis in America!" Because outside our little bubbles, there aren't. When I was growing up, in my particular class of 600 students, there was only one other Pakistani beside me. And this is in Southern California, in a suburb that's racially mixed and isn't out in the boonies.
As for why there are fewer Pakistanis in the US: first of all, people have been immigrating to England for generations (remember that England had colonized Pakistan at one time, so there's a greater familiarity and awareness of it there). It's also a heck of a lot closer (an eight hour flight vs. a twenty four hour flight). England also had lower standards for immigration (initially they just wanted uneducated laborers). The U.S. is much stricter about immigration, and the desis who immigrated to the US are considerably more educated on the whole than the immigrants to the UK. And let's be honest, based on Pakistan's population, only a minority of Pakistanis are privileged enough to be educated. And maybe because of this, our population here doesn't reproduce as rapidly (more family planning--most people here have smaller families). The thing is that most immigration is family based. So when you see your entire khandan has immigrated and you see flana's khandan has also immigrated, you falsely get this feeling that there must be so many people. But when England has less than a million Pakistanis (which has been substantiated numerous times) of course America's population of Pakistanis would be far less. Also, considering India's population is eight times the size of Pakistan's, it also is no surprise that there are more of them in the US and UK.
Re: Why are there so few Pakistanis in the U.S?
There are 4/5 Pakistanis MP's in the British Parliament. There are hundreds of local councillors of Pakistani orgin. Pakistanis make up sizeable numbers in a few towns....e.g in Birmingham a city of about half a million 20% of the population is of Pakistani orgin.
In the U.S and Canada Pakistanis have still to attain critical mass.
Re: Why are there so few Pakistanis in the U.S?
Only in Mississauga alone there are 35,000 Pakistanis.
Re: Why are there so few Pakistanis in the U.S?
As far as education is concerned.....many of the young Pakistanis in the UK are 3/4 generation and they are not uneducated.
I see Pakistanis in the UK playing a greater part in the running of the country in the future.
Pakistanis also have higher birth rate than Indians and in the future they will catch up the Indians in the UK.
Re: Why are there so few Pakistanis in the U.S?
People thinking that there are more Pakistanis than there actually are may be due to seeing Indians and thinking that they are also Pakistanis. Or it maybe people just assume there are more than they are....or that Pakistanis live in certain areas and see more Pakistanis....whereas in rest of the city there may not be any Pakistanis.
Re: Why are there so few Pakistanis in the U.S?
Sir, have you been to Mississauga or Canada? No! then keep your assumptions safe. You stop at any signal light in this city and find every other car has a Pakistani in it. It is litterly like that, and its all over, not in a particular neighbourhood. If you goto Hospitals, Govt or private offices, Malls or Parks, you will see the proportion yourself. And they mostly are highly educated professionals. We also have Pakistani MP from the city and are the most visible minority here. Overall GTA has a large Pakistani Community.
Re: Why are there so few Pakistanis in the U.S?
Have you read the whole thread.....if you did then you would know that the figures quoted are not mine ......but official government figures.
I am not making any assumptions... I am merely stating these figures if anybody is making assumptions then it would be you.
Can you quote me any official figures of how many Pakistanis are in Mississauga....or is the figure of 35,000 an assumption on your part?
Re: Why are there so few Pakistanis in the U.S?
The figures stated by Srshad are the current census figures for both the US/Canada. Its not an issue either way.
Re: Why are there so few Pakistanis in the U.S?
Actually, contrary to the popular belief, most of the Pakistanis dont look like Indians and vice-versa. Pakistanis have more white(aryan)-blood in them and hence that makes them more persian/central asian/gora looking. Indians generally are very dark-skinned and short statured.. much like Sri Lankans.
Re: Why are there so few Pakistanis in the U.S?
That doesn't make sense. Pakistan is a nation of different races. You would never be able to tell the difference between a person from Karachi (muhajir) and a person from Mumbai (no offence meant to people from either of these places). Obviously you'd be able to tell apart a Pathan since there aren't many in India but otherwise, it is indeed very difficult to tell them apart. Likewise, you'd be able to recognize a South Indian (tamil, telegu etc) because that race of people don't reside in Pakistan. If most Sardar jees didn't wear turbans and didn't have long hair, you'd be hard pressed to tell them apart from Pakistani punjabis too.
Re: Why are there so few Pakistanis in the U.S?
lol? I grew up in GTA man. I don’t see as many Pakistanis as you’re talking about. I mostly see Indian Punjabis/Tamils. Indian Punjabis ESPECIALLY in Brampton. Tamils are just all over the place.
Re: Why are there so few Pakistanis in the U.S?
Brampton is filled with Punjabis. Scarborough is filled with Tamils.
Mississauga, though definitely not filled (or anything near the amount that you could consider them a majority) does contain a huge Pakistani diaspora and there is a very small community of Tamils, Punjabis and Indians in general.
Re: Why are there so few Pakistanis in the U.S?
India is just such a Sh1t hole that no one wants to live there... :)
There is your answer.
Re: Why are there so few Pakistanis in the U.S?
Couldn't the same be said about Pakistan too? (Runs and hides from the tomatoes being thrown at me)
