sara the accent varies a lot. just like in US, and some accents make me want to rip out my eyeballs and stuff them in my ears..in UK and in US..and for that matter elsewhere.

Last year my SIL was visiting from lahore. Obviously all she wanted to do was shopping. In every shop she would just say to the salesperson: ' show me that' or ' give me that one'!....now I know, that this is how people talk to shop staff in pakistan or indeed even in america. But here in UK we just dont talk like that! Almost all our sentences start off with 'could you show me that, please or something similar. My SIL hardly ever used the words please and thank you and she is a doctor!! In UK these two words are a must if you want to be shown any respect. Even I as a desi found my SIL's behaviour embarrassing so I can imagine how a native english person would feel. It's not asking much that when visiting any country, you familiarise yourself with their customs a little. I'm sure most pakistanis don't see many foreigners in lahore wearing mini skirts and tank tops! Maybe that foreigner has done some research on the country they are visiting!

This is my personal observation about british ppl I have met in uni etc. I never said ALL brits are like this.

totally agree, the most rude people i have ever met have been from lahore. shopkeepers, drivers i entertain them by being nice to them. saying that, the most pleasant and kind people ive met have also been from lahore. i suppose people are people and you cant generalise. (like you have, original poster).

i have found that too ! lol, when speaking the queens english with a pakistani who thought they where speaking english lol, they think i am not speaking the queens english and they are pronouncing words corrrectly and are speaking english as it should be, and I infact am not speaking properly lol. the arrogance of the upperclass i suppose who have gone to hig classs schools.
