Many believe that Canada is only Toronto, so they stay to that area because they will be able to visit Jerrard Street type of areas all the time. They don't realize that there are higher paying jobs, lower cost of living and more to Canada than what Toronto offers.
For instance, Alberta or the praries.
Pakistani's choose not to move out to the West because mini Pakistan = GTA and dont try to venture into the real Canadian lifestyle.
It's not just Pakistanis, most immigrants who come to Canada choose to settle in Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal. This is clearly because these areas have large ethnic populations and immigrants want to settle in areas where there are others like them. Very few immigrants want to settle in predominantly white provinces due to the fact that they feel isolated and have a harder time adjusting.

as far as canada not being racist and UK being racist, we all saw how accepting Canada was after 9/11 and especially recently whenthe ring was busted.
Yes Canada is very 'accepting' because ppl at lareg hae not experienced desis, and especially not the uneducated unskilled types that got into UK. Canadians are beginning to see that with all kinds of fols from pak immmigrating to Canada...and as more canadians especially the less affluent ones have to deal with new comers...we shall see. I am not even talking multiple decades..this is in the next decade.
I guess your right, most of the newcomers seem to be what my parents call
"chunger" Pakistanis. However, after I visted the UK, The pakistanis there made the new Pakistanis in Toronto seem much better. We will have to see what the future holds for our upcoming generations here. I still do not feel it will be as bad as the UK Pakistanis.
Do not get me wrong, Canadians are not embracing Pakistanis with open arms. What I am talking about is the open racial attitude of the Anglo-Brits. In Toronto most people can not get away with being openly discriminatory. People are racist here but they can not publicly express it. On the other hand, in the UK, people are openly yelling racial slurs and there are open public acts of discrimination.

Its because in the hierarchy of the British society the Pakistanis come at the bottom that is below the bengalis, Indians and the blacks. That is probably the reason why the British have coined an abuse called “PAKI”

well UK has had a head start so by the time canada gets to that level UK would be at a diff plane..either they would have learnt and sorted some mess or be worse off.
as far as open racism versus hidden…racism is racism, and tackling something that is hidden is tougher. So u hve preferences for this and that which is essentially a round about way of saying…brownies, we dont like you.

Bangladeshis are involved in radicalism, selling drugs and gang fights with Blacks.
Indians have white boyfriends, have children out of wedlock, and dress in next to nothing and drink like there is no tomorrow.

Desis in Canada appear normal and same goes for them living in USA.

All they are doing is "assimilation" in the culture...yes without which you won't be considered true citizen of that country. The ones living in Canada and USA are not as much "assimilated".

Paki isn't a racial slur to me..Most people should count themselves lucky to be called a Paki.
Pakis are the second biggest ethnic group in the UK. So all the bad stuff gets associated with them, same as the Turks in Germany, the Arabs in Holland, the blacks in America.

No, I don't think I am. Maybe in white dominated areas there might be some racism but generally in our major cities (Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver) it really is not that bad. I have travelled to Manchester, London and Brimingham; racism is a major issue in all of these cities. There are still certain communities in the UK which are no go zones for Pakistanis.

Lol. Please, dont make me laff..which areas are no go for Pakistanis, and how do they identify a person as Pakistani as opposed to a Spaniard. The Eastern Europeans are getting some abuse (though not as much as Desis probably when they first arrived here).

Well my hubby is a white convert and he was walking through an "asian area" and he had racial abuse slurred at him from an asian muslim auntie! He was just so shocked cos he wud never say anything of the sort to any1 and this stupid woman didnt even know that he was a muslim, just cos he wasnt brown in colour. Allah ka shukar hai, during my whole life in London no1 has ever hurled racial abuse at me. And ive been to some dodgy parts of London. U really cannot generalise like that without actually living in that country for a long period of time.
Arshad5: I agree totally with what u say....3rd and 4th generation asians coming through here and canada doesnt have that yet. But they will also have their issues when these generations come through.

As Amani says, UK Pakis do give some back..though I would say there's definitely discrimination in the job market against people of colour and funny sounding Eastern European names (though the Poles do cheap construction work).

I havn't read any replies and don't care if I am off topic, however, unless you yourself are a Pakistani/Bengali, Indian living in the UK or have lived in the UK for a substantial amount of time, I think your opinion to be invalid. Or to put it nicely, you don't know what your chatting about luv, so give a rest.
There is nowt wrong with Pakistani's, Bengali's or Indian's living in the U.K. We are perfectly fine.

well Pakistanis in Uk are a good sample of Pakistanis in general, if you compare brits of pak ancestary to Pakistanis in pakistan, you will se parallels> In other countries a less diverse mix of pakistanis showed up and thus the sample is not representative of Pakistanis as a whole and thus shows different results.

But yes, some Pakistani people in the UK are more Pakistani than Pakistani’s living in Pakistan, (Bradford).
I think the reason for that is that in the UK, any culture can live as they please. If you want to wear Shalwar Kameez/Sari’s/Dhoti’s in the street, on the bus, you can. No one really does anything. Shouting “go home Paki” is something they show on TV. No one has ever told me to go home and nor do I know other Pakistani people who have suffered racism to an extreme. But honestly, in the UK, no one cares what you wear or what you eat or how you speak.
And somebody mentioned something about a drug problem amonst Pakistani people in the UK. Pakistan has the highest rate of drug abusers in the world. My daddi told me that and she does not lie!

I recently watched a BBC documentry on muslims in Europe. They had a segment on rising tensions between Pakistanis and the Brits. They showed a Community outside of Bradford where Pakistanis where not welcomed. They interviewed several locals aswell as a local MP. The locals openly sated that they did not like "Pakis" and that "Pakis" were not welcome in their neighbourhoods. The local MP was a memeber of the BNP and his statements were similar to those of the locals. By the way, the BNP is a rightest political party that openly propogates hatred againts ethnic minorities in the UK. They also do not allow non-caucasions to join their party.

I think when people grow up in multi-ethnic societies there is bound to be prejudices, stereotypes and racism. We all stereotype and I know for a fact that most people at some point in there life have been prejudice. There is a big difference between openly expressing these thoughts and keeping them to oneself. Racism is Racism and it will never stop, however, it can be socially unexcepted.

The bold part of your statement is incorrect. A few years ago the BNP's tv election campaign had a sikh man telling all the "Pakis" to go home.

Yeah your right. The BNP actually got together with Sikh and Hindu groups to launch an anti-islamic campaign. I do remember hearing something about the party opening up membership for ethnic minorities but up until that they have been purely caucasion.
