Because when girls are born, parents feel responsible for them until they day they are married. When they get married, that responsibility is handed to her husband.
Girls have always been viewed as a zimmidari. Every parent dreams of the day they find a good man to leave their daughter with so they can live in peace knowing someone will be there to take care of her.
