Because marriage allows us to satisfy our need for companionship and i'A, children as well. Oh, and I wouldn't call it an obsession, rather - it's a desire/khwaish women and men both have.

And why the desire for kids? The reason I ask is frankly this forum is a whose who of people who don't deserve to be married or those who can't manage a proper relationship. 1 out of 3 threads is a perfect example of a dysfunctional family where both spouses are too dumb to make a marriage work.

To state the obvious, no one goes into a relationship with thoughts about what's going to go wrong in their relationship and how unhappy they could/may be. Most people assume that the state of marriage is a magical cure for all that ails us during singledom and once we say "kabul" our lives will be better.
As for the desire for children, I'd venture to say, that the desire for kids is innate (not for everyone- there are exceptions) - but how else would we propagate the human condition?
And really, since when does GS and the threads posted on GS stand as a proxy for real life?

Since most women here think the average example of a desi man applies to the wide spectrum of the gender in the real world. Considering how warped some of the posters here are and how they turn everything into a damn gender debate, I wouldn't be surprised that some husband somewhere is getting abused right now because of some thread on GS and the wife thinking "Could he do this to me?"
Sure nobody goes into marriage saying or thinking that its gonna be bad. But hell they shouldn't go in with Bollywood sentiments of heaven on earth either. It seems the average women believes that marriage is this utopia. That solves all. Man thinks its the old ball and chain.

Going through the discussion you two are having, this is exactly what I was thinking.
CM: Either you should rename the thread to 'Why are GS girls so obsessed with marriage?' or discussion should not be GS specific.

Human nature and desire for companionship, external pressures, blackmail by parents, a string of comments from totally non-concerned gossipy people.
Oh well there are loads of reasons which makes the girls want to settle down and just get married. And frankly it is a man's world. I know this might be the most cliched backward statement coming from me. But it still is the truth. No matter how much we flaunt on women's rights and the increasing securiity and freedom of speech and action of women ... the glaring fact is still there! Even in Life1 we have seen such threads where you want to punch some men's eyes' out for their horrific tales of injustice and cruelty and in others it's about banging one's head on a wall after reading about the chaos a few women too can cause be it as MIL, SIL , DIL (whatever out-lawed IL's rishta you name).
