I hv been reading a lot of threads n posts here from guppies, but I simply fail to understand the need of frequently used word DESI here on GS,is it used for ppl living back home,or it’s used as a sarcasm on other ppl who are not on same page as you guys are?or if someone wanna make a joke of other’s mindset/thinking/upbringing, wich is different from urs,one use DESI Word for him/her to define her in a certain way?or ppl think that they hv got Aqal E Kul in some way or the other, wich others don/can’t have?or they think of themselves as superiors from other human beings so if they differ on anything others say/do they call them desi’s or desi mindset?or there’s anything negative being a desi? ![]()
Re: wht's up with the DESI word?
errr because it's a desi forum.
Re: wht's up with the DESI word?
I actually don't like this word 'Desi'. My understanding for it is "A person, belonging to Pakistan, Living Abroad, imposing his Back Home activities/thoughts/style on people living in the alien country" ... I think it's rude and humiliating to call someone Desi.
Re: wht's up with the DESI word?
Desi broadly describes people, tradition, food, language, clothing, utensils, recipes, anything that belongs to Indian subcontinent (primarily north India and Pakistan).
Definitely not an insult.
Re: wht's up with the DESI word?
Wha? It's not an insult. I'm a proud Desi myself.
Re: wht's up with the DESI word?
Desi Ghee :p
. Yeah I agree wid u here but no one will accept that they do this:chai:

. Oh you've made a thread wht's wrong wid the desi women:) and thanks for refreshing the definition of desi :D
Re: wht's up with the DESI word?
whenever i use 'Desi' its never in a derogatory way.
Re: wht's up with the DESI word?
there is a 'desi' in "Desire";) .
desi is a derogatory word in indian subcontinent but not if you use in pardes.
in fact we arent desi in foreign land, we are "pardesi". some day this mistake will be corrected but it aint happening any time soon
Re: wht's up with the DESI word?
I think desi is a collective term of people living abroad for all South Asians. I don't know but I don't find it insulting. Yes in our own countries it might sound weird because it is equated as a synonym of desi/do number !
But here this term is used in reference to our rich culture, food everything. Desi restaurants, desi culture. At the end of the day it depends on the way the person has used the term and in what perspective but the word itself isn't desi
Re: wht's up with the DESI word?
What kakaballi and Eni said.
And I prefer desi any day over "paki"
Re: wht's up with the DESI word?
I've never used the word in a derogatory context... in fact I refer to many things I like to do, wear, eat etc. as desi... and other like-minded folks who share similar cultural attributes as desi as well.
Re: wht's up with the DESI word?
I don't find it at all insulting or derogatory....I prefer it in fact.
I can understand why in Pakistan it may be considered a derogatory term because over there, in some circles, even the term "urdu speaking" is a gaali. (Not in the traditional sense of the world "urdu speaking" as in "mohajir" but when referring to someone as "backward" when they may not speak english as fluently as is expected....)
Re: wht's up with the DESI word?
I think people who have a hangup over the word "desi" need to get over it.
Re: wht’s up with the DESI word?
At first my father used to be really ticked off with the word DESI. When he was visiting me in Cali (late 90s), and I used the word couple of time passing through Desi baaazar, he was like
“Why do you use word Desi this much? Tum khud kia ho? tum khud bhi desi ho” ![]()
awwww my abbu ![]()
I had to explain to him that I do not not use it as derogatory term. I (or we) use it to define people with similar cultural attributes

this! I find desi much much better than paki
Re: wht's up with the DESI word?
I am a desan, how can I mind that.
Re: wht's up with the DESI word?
LOL. In my early days I shocked that pakistani community uses desi *word without hesitation, but that is how they refer each other in west. So, it is perfectly ok to say desi in the context where it is not considered as derogatory, while in Pakistan it means villager or *dehati.
Re: wht's up with the DESI word?
its not the word, its how you use it.
