Okay, so one of my greatest pet peeves - if I need to get anything done around the home, I either do it myself or have to hire out for a contractor or handyman. They guys in my family are all for hiring someone rather than spending the time and effort themselves.
In the interest of saving money - I end up doing the little jobs. Take for example, last year, I bought an elliptical - who assembled the sucker - ME. We got a new light fixture - who installed it - ME. We had a plumbing problem - who had to get out the snake and clear the drain - ME. I wanted to rearrange furniture - who moved the heavy pieces - who else but ME - argh!! Any time anything needs to be assembled (chairs, bookcases, etc.) - I get called upon.
So ladies and gents - who wears the tool belt in your home? And are you possessive about your tool belt or are you willing to share?
it's time to put them where they need to be! I would be really embarrassed if my sister/wife talked like that about me. Tell them straight up to be men!
There has to be a balance; wasting money on even the simplest tasks out of convenience such as fixing a leaky faucet isnt wise, but neither is being a miser and doing even the biggest tasks by yourself (such as moving), any better.
I have always seen my father/uncle doing small to mid size home projects...and since my childhood I loved to help them out started with handing out hammer when I was 5 and last project I did was putting out 10x10 cement floor in patio.
Since getting married, we have been living in condos/apartments and hence there are no more home-projects other than handing a picture here, moving a furniture there -- zang lagh gaya hai aab :).
btw, Wife helps me every bit she can! to the extent that I have to send her back into home singing "dhoop main nikla na karoo roop ke rani, gora rangh kala na parh jayee" ;)
Being youngest and tall in the family says it all . It was my duty to change bulbs as I am tall . Clean the fans as I am tall . Hang the curtains as I am tall . Plow the lawn because I am youngest . Pick the fruit from trees as I am youngest etc etc .
My mum’s an avid gardener - so who do you think turned the soil in the spring so she could plant the flowers? I’d say me - but that’d be a lie - we hired one of the neighbourhood kids to that. But I did prune the trees…
The only things the guys do is shovel the snow, mow the lawn and vacuum - no hammering for them.
hehe....it's same with us. In fact I enjoy it and take comfort in knowing 'I can do it'. :)
So far I've done many tasks which include turning an empty room into a fully working kitchen. It was fun.
For our move we worked together, we planned to hire some ppl but it proved too difficult to have some hired help 2 days before christmas so we ended up loading everything in that rented truck n off we drove to london. (the washing machine and dishwasher were heaviest to bring downstairs, but we did it). :)

Satisfaction, shmatisfaction - like Russell Peters says, I just want the guys in the house to "BE A MAN!!!" - (Chinese accent included).
my husband does all the manly things, neither does he ask, he asked me to help once, and i ended up breaking half the stuff and nearly knocking his eyeballs out with the hammer.
