The Answer to that would not be based on my opinion nor yours, it is based on the Islamic cnotexts. That’s where it must be conducted from. Prophet Muhammad Taught a blind man to make tawassul by the Prophet to get cured. This hadith is distinguished by Hadith Al A^ma or the (The hadith of the Blind man). Part of what the Prophet taught him to say what means: “…O Muhammad I ask Allah by your virtue to get cured..” So if the Prophet taught us to do so, he’s our role model, may Allah rasise his rank. You can also make Du^a by the virtue of the Saliheen even if they are in their graves. You can say: "O Allah, I ask you grant me from the blessings of ^abdul Qadir Al Jaylanniyy (Agreat Famous scholar).. Or you can say "O Allah I ask you to protect me from helfire by the virtue of your great Muslim Awlia`..)
This is all taken from the Islamic contexts and none contradict. One must be knowledgeable to be able to judge.
And Allah Knows Best.
