Of all the desis still alive, I'd say with certainty that its got to be *Vijay Singh *(golfer). I am sure more people in the US know who Vijay Singh is compared to Dr **Sanjay Gupta *(who'd be a close second). No movie director, yoga instructor, well-being guru or B-list movie star will come close.
If you include all desis alive and dead, then *Gandhi **is *numero uno by a big margin. He is practically an adjective in American pop culture - a very well-known one at that.

***** Technically Vijay is from Fiji (with Indian heritage), but he walks like a desi, talks like a desi, looks like a desi (very very), so he gotta be a desi.
Are you sure? I know there is a fictional character called "Vijay" in Octopussy, but Vijay Singh - the golfer - never starred in that movie, or any movie for that matter, to the best of my knowledge. The actor who played the role of "Vijay", his name is Vijay Amritraj.
Vijay, obviously, is a very common name in India and Indian communities.
lol that wasnt vijay singh! that was vijay amritaj, he was a tennis player, and did some movies... I think his best role (short though) was in star trek iv, the voyage home, where he played starfleet captain whose ship was crippled by a carrier frequency emitted by a probe that was seeking humbpack whales on planet earth...
I actually met him at a tennis tournament here. He was also instrumental in getting networks like espn and turner establish markets in India. you guys might remember him from the early days of Star Sports Asia, he used to do the wimbledon broadcast commentary...
but i think that Apu is the most famous desi in the states
also notable desis:
m. night shamalan (sp?)
dr sanjay gupta
deepak chopra
deepta mehta
mira nair
parminder nagra
the bend it like bechkam director
naveen andrews (the guy from lost)
padami lakshmi
isnt there some desi guy on heros?
sajaya malakar
also that child doctor that was on oprah....wow! that was amazing!
