I am a Sunni Syed too. My family has the Shijra that goes back to the our Prophet (pbuh). However, I don't think that I deserve a special tratment or anything like that. There are a lot of people at this site who think that this whole Syed thing is a hoax.
A lot of people migrated from Arab to the Indian sub-continent. How else do you think Islam spread here? To keep the record straight, not all of the Prophet's family was Shaheed in Karbala. Zainul Abedeen Hazrat Imam Hussain's son fortunately survived.
My grandfather's (Daada) and my grandmother's (Naani) ancestory lines are common when traced back six generations. They both claim to be from Syed family. Now I don't think this is mere coincidence or a fabrication. One more thing... there are Syed's in other places besides Pakistan. I have a distant uncle who is a Syed and has lived in Medina eversince. He only speaks Arabic, no Urdu. There are also Syed's in Iran and Iraq.
I agree that there are a lot of fake Syeds around.

being a syed is merely a matter of pride...like some british claiming to be distint relative of the queen.....
in islam only thing that matters is Taqwa..
As for being related to the Prophet, well abu-lahab was his chacha....and he is one man who has been condemned by name in quran...." surah lahab"...he would be declared a true syed......syed, mirza, khan , awan are just ways of identification and no more....
I am a SYED. I include it in my name because I have no other surname!
This is an interesting thread....I had no idea that Syed's were to be afforded so many priveleges. Tell me more...I've been missing out all these years.
On a serious note, my parents never once taught us that we were special in some way because of our name.
Those Syed's that believe they are superior to other Muslims are no different to the Brahmins in Hinduism.
To sum it up, in my book, a person claiming any form of lineage...even the mere mention of....is akin to 'name dropping'.
Where I come from, that is a major faux pas!!!!

Let me get this straight. There is actually such a thing as a True Syed and a False Syed? And all non syeds are low clas people calling themselves syeds to get respect?
Im not a Syed, never have been, never will be, but my respect isnt tied to being linked to the name Syed. And Im sure noone elses is either. Not having Syed with ones name doesnt make a person a low class citizen, and having Syed doesnt make them respectable. There is no such thing as a lineage. When two people get married, the lineage gets mixed, and hence the purity of the lineage is compromised right there.
Im sorry, but this issue is so trivial and childish to me....much like when as kids, we used to prove ourselves superior to other kisd by saying what our father did yesterday.

Who gives a damn as to what ur abba can do, or what he has. What have u done is what matters, and if u cant provide a satisfying answer, then u dont even deserve your own name, let alone Syed.
I'm a Syed and trust me most Syed's have no airs about there ancestory. But Coming from the family of the prophet is an Honour. If People say Syed's demand respect double of an ordinary man , they also have double reponsability to keep Islanm the Perfect Riligion!!(not that any of this is true)
Hinduisim has ruined Islam in The sub-continent with thier caste system!! and stupid men follow them(including syeds) thinking that thier the best or above the rest.
Allah is always watching and he knows who are the true Syeds.
