who can beat Lara?

I remember last time Lara broke the world record it was talk of the day to bring forward players who had good chance to be the next player to hold the world record.

Who do you think is able to break Lara’s record of 400no?

In my opinion there are a few. A player capable of doing it should play in the top 4 of the innings, and should be able to score quickly. Secondly, he should possess the mental strength to concentrate for such a long period.

My guess are as follows:

V Sehwag: the 309 proved he is capable of big scores…and I’m sure he will be improving as batsman in the coming years.

M Hayden: he has done it once, he can surely do it again

R Ponting: he’s shown to be a fine captain and have the mental strenght that comes with it. Haven’t seen him play irresponsibly in the last few years. Apart from that he’s a quick scorer.

B Lara: who could ever rule him out to break his own record?

J Kallis: when in form perhaps the equal of the players mentioned above. He’s often the steady ship of the SA innings, and he’s ever improving as player.

Lara himself..
Sehwag.

I hope its not Sehwag. Tendulkar fine. Dravid good enough. But not Sehwag.

^of course, Tendulkar shud be in that list as well. although i think he has less chance than Sehwag

Tendulkar can probably do it. Shewag nahh!!!!!!. Other teams have proper fielders.

Dravid.. hands down. He has an amazing temperament.. and will just keep on and on.

:hehe: very right. Lara did not provide a single clear cut chance in his 400 while Sehwaq always gives you a chance sooner rather than later.
As far as i foresee 400 wont be broken for a few years. And Lara will break it again if at all.

no one....
stop dreaming all of u....

to everyone whose said sehwag, lemme tell u guyz that never ever in his life time will he be able to break lara's record. his 309 included 10 chances. but oh yeah, they will play against pak next yr so if we give a couple more chances maybe he would be able to reach that target!

on a serious note, if there is anyone who can break lara's 400 run mark it is lara himself. dravid has the next best chance followed by sachin.

hayden, gilchrist, kallis, inzi etc r all gd but i don think they'll ever come near that mark. earlier, i would have chosen gary kirsten but he is retired now.

Ok if someone makes 400 he probably needs to be lucky once or twice,

But sehwag doesnt have the skill (yet) to make 400.

Yes he can do it if he gets dropped about 4 to 5 times through out his innings whilst lara's innings had one chance in it. Tendulkar when he made 194 against pakistan was faultless which in my opinion is far better than sehwags 309.

if we're talking about chanceless innings against decent oppositions (not Zimb, and Bang) no one will break his record.

this maybe bit too early... but i think if given chance and respect Asim Kamal of Pakistan will be the man to do this. ;) He has courage, determination and will to do what our star batsmen couldn't do.

‘Selfish’ Lara record untouchable, says Aussie skipper Ponting](Yahoo is part of the Yahoo family of brands.)

SYDNEY (AFP) - Australia’s desire to win Test matches in quick time makes surpassing Brian Lara’s world record score virtually unattainable, skipper Ricky Ponting has said here.

Ponting doubts whether Lara’s magnificent unbeaten 400, made for the West Indies against England at Antigua last week, will ever be surpassed because few skippers in world cricket would be willing to jeopardise a winning position by allowing one batsman to spend so long at the crease.

Lara’s quadruple century - the first in Test history, eclipsing Matthew Hayden’s former world mark of 380 - was almost 13 hours in the making.

Lara has been criticised for being selfish in chasing the world record until after lunch on the third day of the fourth Test and not leaving enough time for his team to win the match.

“It’s hard to imagine an Australian player doing it, just because of the way we play our cricket. It’s generally not the way we play,” Ponting said Monday.

"I’ve read some of the reports in the paper over the last couple of days about Lara’s innings.

"Their whole first innings might have been geared around one individual performance and they could have let a Test match slip because of it.

“They ran out of time in the game - that’s not the way the Australian team plays.”

Matthew Hayden’s previous world record 380 against Zimbabwe in Perth last October took just over ten hours in a match Australia won by an innings and 175 runs early on the fifth day.

Ponting said then captain Steve Waugh’s decision to let Hayden keep batting, in an effort to break Lara’s previous world record of 375, was the exception to the team rule.

“It was a very rare thing what we did with that Zimbabwean Test match, for Matty to be able to bat for as long as he did and go on and make that big score,” Ponting said.

“He was given the opportunity to go on and break Brian’s record and he did that. He was going to be given another half an hour, or 20 minutes, to try to get to 400 but unfortunately he got out.”

Ponting, Hayden, Lara and India’s Sachin Tendulkar are regarded as world cricket’s pre-eminent batsmen, but the Australian skipper said he was only vaguely interested in individual records.

“It would be nice if you could be the world record holder but at the end of the day, as we’ve seen, it doesn’t necessarily win you a Test match, which is what we’re all about,” he said.

“Everyone will be chasing it, there’s a record there now I’m sure a lot of batsmen around the world would like to have their name next to. But we’ll have to wait and see how things pan out over the next few years.”

Australia play two Tests in Zimbabwe next month.

^ well, just hope Zimbabwe get out of that series without many other records scored against them

Ponting can say whatever he wants, but once a player of his reaches 250, he will surely let him bat on

I dont think so. If he does this , then he will be out next of AUs squad game.Aussie media will slaughter him.Aussies rarely put personal goal above team goal.

I agree with what he said. In modern cricket a captain can afford atmost 2 days of batting if he is not a selfish person which most of them are. This means that, only those people can break this record who play top of the order and are strokemakers. Looking at current lot of players I think this can only be done by either Sehwag,Gibbs or Jaysurya agaisnt some weaker opposition.

Ponting makes a good point but you have to see how England demolished West Indies side in first three test games - they were in total misery - i think somehow Lara's record give West Indies fan something to cheer about - after all he is one of the true legends currently playing in the side.
