and getting married in a rich family or dealing with extra marital affairs is the biggest problem of Pakistani middle class, if we consider the depiction of society as per today's dramas.
Re: Who are the target viewers of Pakistani dramas
I don't know many dramas, mainly because the only channel running in our home is Geo but they have this one drama called, "Sabz Pari Laal Kaboter" (something like that, I can't covert Urdu to English letters) and from the looks of it seems to be about a poor family struggling to survive? I don't know. There's also some drama called Diya Jalaye Rakhna which is about giving females and poor folk an education.
I don't really watch them, I just kind of know some dramas.
But I don't get how displaying issues in societies in dramas will get anybody fired up about anything. I thought entertainment was to get away from the pains of real life. I know it won't hurt to make a decent storyline about something other than marriage, but still. How will this do anything?

you came up with good examples. 'Sabz Pari Laal Kabootar' and 'Diya Jalae Rakhna' tried their best to do something different, but they didn't get applause like Humsafar and Zindagi Gulzar hai. They were lost among other projects running at that time.
As far as the question of how a message conveyed through drama / movie affects lives of viewers, I would say people follow what is being emphasized (read as glamorised) on media. Entertainment is not necessarily be an escape from realities all the time. Scripts based on real life issues can create necessary awareness among the masses. One may come up and say news channels are doing all this, but one should keep in mind that drama has its own impact and its not necessary that drama viewers also follow News channels in same spirit.

See, that's the problem. The majority of viewers do not* care* about dramas raising awareness, but they do love "spicy", "juicy" dramas filled centered around marriage and affairs.
And the makers of these Dramas see that, and don't make dramas about important issues about in Pakistani society.
Which leads me to believe the entertainment isn't exactly a medium for raising awareness. It can, it definitely has the potential to, but will the masses ever buy it?

I think we can't put blame on viewers all the time. Though 'Diya jalae' and 'sabz Pari, laal kabootar' tried to do something different, but they lacked production quality and other material that can hook the viewers. These both projects are best example of derailing.
Having said the above, if a good project is made and promoted properly people do watch it and appreciate the effort. Example in recent history is "daastan' based on partition and the sacrifices Muslims gave for independence. It was very well received by masses and it did have a message. Another example is 'Dreamers' a Youth oriented story from geo / aag TV and people again liked the concept and enjoyed it.

Interesting. I never heard of Dastaan, and I didn't know Dreamers was that popular.
What was the concept of Dreamers? It was based on college life and friendship.

yes.. something different that burgers can relate to :p
I think 'Sat rungi' was another good attempt to do something different. The point is people do watch when experiments are done properly.
Satrangi was very informative , and the bus they used was beautiful mujhy bhe aisi bus chahye ![]()
Re: Who are the target viewers of Pakistani dramas
Yes, informative and entertaining. Thats what was being followed by PTV directors till 1990s. There were plays based on historical events, plays based on folk stories, plays based on classics from Urdu literature. ‘Qasmi Kahani’ series based on Ahmed Nadeem Qasmis stories gave classic plays each having different concepts. ‘Kahani Ghar’ series where they dramatised stories of ‘Bano Qudsia’, ‘Ghulam Abbas’, ‘Manto’, ‘Mumtaz Mufti’ was also a brilliant production. Recently, TV One did ‘Bolte Afsane’ which was a good effort and some good plays like ‘Aalan’ and ‘Bichhoo Phuppi’.
