Who are memons?

What’s the history behind memons?

Re: Who are memons?

I left that book about History of Memon with my father :(

Memon are said to be first converts of Islam in Sindh and some people believe that they were actually called Momin (faithful) which changed to Memon with the passage of time

Re: Who are memons?

Interesting, and what's the difference between Urdu speaking, Sindhi and Gujarati memons?

Re: Who are memons?

No difference. They are all same. Memons are basically trading community who kept on settling in different parts of India (Gujrat, etc) for business purposes and therefore their language was affected due to those dialects.

Re: Who are memons?

^ and what's the reason for them being so successful in business? Honest and hardworking?

Re: Who are memons?

May be its in their genes like Banyas :hehe:

Re: Who are memons?

There are also Kutchi speaking memons

from Wiki:

Mutual intelligibility

In addition, Kutchi is also understood by speakers of the Memoni dialect, spoken by individual belonging to the Memoni ethnicity within Pakistan and India, so much so that they could have an entire conversation with only a few words of difference. The grammatical structure is generally the same and thus, could be understood by most Memons, be they Batwa Memon, Dhoraji Memon, or any other sub-group of Memons.

Khatiawaris and Kutchi speaking memons also fall into the category of Hindus that were converted to Ismaili tariqah by Aga Khan II and later Sultan Mohammad Shah Aga Khan III.

Re: Who are memons?

i believe Memons are SUNNIS unlike Bohris who are Shi'a [an offshoot of Ismaili]. i always got confused between the two communities until i came to Canada and met a few from each community. Memons are peace loving people and a very money loving people as well! :)

I meant how they speak,i have a khatiawari memon friend, so I know how they speak khatiawari :hmmm:

Re: Who are memons?

Katchi dialect is very similar to Sindhi we speak, as Kutch is nearer to Sindh then KathiyawaR geographically
