With all the different types of smoke, seems like they have a touch of ‘drama queen’ in them…

Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger of Germany is the new pope and takes the name Benedict XVI.
For more than two decades as prefect of the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith, Joseph Ratzinger was among Pope John Paul’s key supporters in the effort to shore up faith around the world.
The German was widely discussed as a possible successor to John Paul. Observers say given his age of 78, Ratzinger might be considered a “transition” pope to follow John Paul’s 26-year papacy.
In his role as the guardian of church doctrine, Ratzinger silenced dissident theologians and repeated Church teachings.
He draws support from conservatives who favor continuing John Paul’s policies of barrign women priests, abortion, euthanasia and contraception.
Ratzinger became a cardinal in 1977.
Re: White Smoke in the Vatican - New pope selected by cardinals
White smoke means that the selected Pop is white. Will we ever see black or yellow or brown smoke?
Re: White Smoke in the Vatican - New pope selected by cardinals
So he is 78? hmmm it means we will see smoke again in couple of years.
Re: White Smoke in the Vatican - New pope selected by cardinals
AS - they are already speculating that was the reason he was chosen, so they would have a bit more time to decide on someone more dynamic and charismatic. He is an ultra-ultra conservative. These next few years ought to be interesting.
Re: White Smoke in the Vatican - New pope selected by cardinals
Minah_Pa you are exactly right. I don’t think they would like to select an ultra conservative pope for a very long run. But why they need more time to decide. Pope J P was showing the signs of his departure for at least last 2 or 3 years. They had enough time to decide a charismatic person.
Re: White Smoke in the Vatican - New pope selected by cardinals
Because I don't think they have the person they need yet. I agree with you.
Re: White Smoke in the Vatican - New pope selected by cardinals
I was taking a class on Christianity this semester and I felt that I came out with a lot of unanswered questions. minah_pa, since you're Catholic and we're on the topic of the pope, what signifiance does he play in a Catholic's life?
Re: White Smoke in the Vatican - New pope selected by cardinals
Larki - I will try, but I am no expert. In my life, he would be a learned religious teacher. Sort of like a moral compass. He is the one that gives Catholics guidance through interpreting the scripture for the different issues out there, like abortion, euthanasia (sp?), etc. He is also our ambassador in the world.
There are a lot of things personally that are legal now like abortion (only because this is a controversial issue debated in the Catholic Church) that I would not do in my life and I agree with the Catholic Church's stance up to a point. I do not believe we have the right to impose our views on others so I believe that there should be a choice available.
Sorry, had to leave for a bit - So while the church and Pope may say one thing, we do not have to follow blindly. They can say no abortions and point to scripture, so Catholics know no abortions. But they can suggest we vote against a person who believes abortion should be a choice (and the past Pope did this) but it is a suggestion only, not something we must follow, so that is left to personal choice and belief. So, guidance is a big part of what the Pope does.
Re: White Smoke in the Vatican - New pope selected by cardinals
i hear he's a former nazi?
Re: White Smoke in the Vatican - New pope selected by cardinals
post a link then.....
I hear a lot of things but I verify anything before I believe it and pass it on, try it
Re: White Smoke in the Vatican - New pope selected by cardinals
Every Old German is not necessarily former Nazi.
Re: White Smoke in the Vatican - New pope selected by cardinals
Here you go:
Josef Ratzinger was born in Rhode Island. The son of a police officer who was anti-Nazi. In 1937 Ratzinger’s father retired and setled in the town of Traunstein. When Ratzinger turned 14 in 1941, he joined the Nazi Hitler Youth. According to his biographer John Allen he was not an enthusiastic member. He requested to be taken off the rolls and reportedly refused to attend a single meeting. In 1943, at the age of 16 he was, along with the rest of his class, drafted into the Flak or anti-aircraft corps, responsible for the guarding of a BMW plant outside Munich. He was then sent for basic infantry training and was posted to Hungary, where he worked setting up anti-tank defences until deserting in April 1945. In 1945 he was briefly held in an Allied POW camp, where he attended de-Nazification classes. By June he was released, and he and his brother (Georg) entered a Catholic seminary. On June 29, 1951, they were ordained by Cardinal Faulhaber of Munich. His dissertation (1953) was on Saint Augustine, his Habilitationsschrift (second dissertation) on Saint Bonaventure.

sorry Minah, dear-swear i didn’t mean to cause an argument or bad feelings, i had just read that
here you go:

by the way, agent smith, i studied german in both HS and college-i actually have quite a fondness for the language and the land-and you know i don’t recall saying that every German was a nazi
Re: White Smoke in the Vatican - New pope selected by cardinals
Actually, every Nazi was not necessarily a nazi. Membership of the Nazi party was a prerequisite for professional success in most jobs in Germany, so a significant number of germans joined out of a desire to get ahead in their career rather than ideological conviction.

Re: White Smoke in the Vatican - New pope selected by cardinals
714 - a little miffed at first after the hard going in general, you asked that at the wrong time and I took it the wrong way. I'm really sorry, I was a bit curt in my answer to you. Thank you for the other link.
Re: White Smoke in the Vatican - New pope selected by cardinals
off topic: Me too 714! I wanted to major in German and so I studied it in high school and university. I love Germany, been there many, many times. Majority of the people I came across were quite normal and friendly and told me they were quite fed up of being stereotyped all the time as nazis.
Congrats on the new Pope to Catholics here … Minah_Pa, Lastknightess … and whoever else there is. ![]()
