People like this dumb unattractive weird student union leader at Dalhousie are the reason many are getting wary of us…no one publicly challenges these hate full weirdos and that is where the biggest problem is…How is her behavior any less repugnant then a white supremacist?
I myself was MBA student of Dalhousie University Halifax NS in the late nineties. Never encountered such environment. However it was a fact that there was tug of war going on between white and non-white which included people from all over the world. Most vocal during that period were people from Caribbean Island origin. One of my white class fellow and many white (Scottish Origin) were worried about that white would become minority in the future if Canada continued its open immigration policy and with white population decline due to no growth in white families.
The look that she is sporting and the language she is using and her attitude and behavior is only going to help in promoting the stereotype. She is getting a 32K honorarium, taxpayer contribute to her education and this is her sense of entitlement. She can express herself in a non racist and non abusive fashion. The problem is that many display their hatred for whites in their homes and private gatherings and that just infects their children. I hope they discipline her.
Canada’s weird, colleges are all about free speech and expressing yourself. She pointed at a “white fragility” and by making a big deal out of her tweet they’re just proving her right lol.
Yeah well Richard Spencer was touting free speech also and he had to face a lot of angry people. He is very cunning and he knows how to increase his public appeal. He asked his followers to dress nice and talk nice even though they present hateful ideas. This Masuma is dressed like ISIS wife yet she has makeup on which is not allowed in faith and has eyebrows done which is haram. As a member of union she shouldn’t be spreading hate. Our corporation has mandated our code of conduct and hateful posts would get us fired. There is a code of conduct she signed.
It really is an interesting term but the lack of combativeness is mistaken for weakness and then there is a heavy price to pay. Once Masuma gets kicked off the gravy train I am not sure if she will be so cocky. Taxpayer is paying for her education, she is getting 32K Honorarium and yet she is abusive towards the country she chose to call home. People like her are a gift to supremacist groups which helps strengthen their narrative.
Also, I do not think it is people like her that are making us look bad and “untrustworthy.” At worst she is just the Ess Jay Dubya stereotype that right-wingers wank off too. I do not know about Canadian politics, but I do believe this white backlash that is happening right now in many countries was bound to happen regardless of whether some “ISIS wife” looking chick called out white fragility. Racism/Xenophobia/Misogyny and all that mess never really went away and just became more passive and subtle. The economy got worse and when you still have societal issues like that lurking around and economic issues…yeah that is definitely going to lead to some far-right wing revival.
I am not sure if it is the economy or the non stop media coverage of people trying to run over civilians with trucks or charging women and children with knives and court challenges where the pseudo Isis bride refused to uncover her face for citizenship oath taking, or refugees sexually assaulting scores of women on new years eve etc are responsible and the media and right wing is ecstatic about exploiting this to the fullest.
Largest immigrant group in Canada is filipinos and although they are a visible minority they are totally loved and welcomed. We as real estate professionals chase after them, employers love to hire them and neighbors and schools love them as they act in polite, courteous and friendly manner and don’t advertise their hatred for their new home. They are normally not on welfare and positively contribute to society.
If it was the economy then we would hear negativity for them also.
That’s the thing though. We are a perfect scapegoat because of the far right radicals on our side. Because of a **** economy the majority will look for a scapegoat to put the blame on for their problems. Here in the US it is the “Mexicans taking our jobs” “the blacks” and the “moozlim/mudslimes” or whatever group instead of the ****ty government ****ing everyone over (it is American meddling that is the root of a lot of contemporary problems in the middle east and central America). Basically the point I was trying to make is that the political/economic climate set up created a situation where a far-right revival was bound to happen and we happen to be an easy scapegoat. If it wasn’t us, it would have been someone else being dehumanized.
Although, this doesn’t take away from the fact that people from Muslim majority countries do need to assimilate better and address problems in their respective communities. I personally don’t know any weirdos or any family of weirdos in the Pakistani community where I live, but some stuff that comes out of other places…um. At most, we have to be the people who address it and fix it, because if it is not us it will be, like you said, right wing media who wants to add fuel to the fire and continue to foster attitudes that dehumanize us as a whole.
We are considered accomplice by our silence, I think we have to reject and disown people like Masuma very vociferously. People like her become the self appointed spokespersons for all muslims. If we don’t oppose the likes of her, how would society know that she is not us. I don’t oppose disagreements and debates but the aggressive and abusive language she and likes of her use is a big problem. She is frigging top news all over the country.
She is not the person for the Muslim community to rally around to show how assimilating and good we are, because her “offense” is not a high priority. All she did was look like an overzealous activist who made the mistake of “looking too Muslim”, and the reasons for her calling out white fragility aren’t even bad. The silence of the Muslim community looks worse when we see terrorist attacks and such. Also, there comes a point where we cannot escape dehumanization from majority groups. If people want to make an active effort to denounce ISIS/Islamic Terrorism in general, the extreme misogyny and homophobia..etc they can do that, but I do not see why we should do damage control for this chick because she is the least of our worries.
You are right we should have been more actively involved in denouncing many other serious incidences but her issue has been top news also and she is playing the victim card also and bringing discrimination as a muslim into the mix. We had a Jordanian Imam in Quebec who made a serious hate speech against Jews and not one muslim spoke against it. The mosque put the speech on their website and never apologised for it. Lots of things that go on shape the public opinion.
Here is a more detailed article, just to show the irony of things is that both herself and president of the union are hijabis. A country so open to elect them as representatives and they are still playing the racial card..They were in a position to influence our image in a good way but they chose to reinforce the stereotype
Of course it will be top news. It is a hijab wearing woman talking about white fragility. If she was a white chick critiquing her own people this would not be that big of a deal, but since it is someone who has openly displayed their faith (and it is a faith that is definitely not looking good in public perception) then it will carry more controversy. Whites do not like “uppity” people of color in any way shape or form. Whether you agree with her way of criticizing the fact that Canada is pretty much a settler colonialist state that has marginalized many of the native groups (let’s be real here!) is one thing, but let’s not get it twisted. If she was a white chick this wouldn’t be that much of a controversial issue.
However, the Jordanian imam is a completely different issue. *That *is a whole different ballpark in regards to how Muslims act and are then perceived by the general public. That man is pretty much preaching antisemitism which should be called out, protested, and even boycotted until they remove the imam.
so is she going to be expelled from univ ?? That would be something eh and to repay the student loan, haha
It’s ironic how these days the muslims are the ones who have absolutely NO patience. Just see how they’re pushing/shoving each other after Jumma namaz trying to get out asap to back to their dollar-making. Sabar nam ki chez ka naam-o-nishan nai milayga. And they don’t even yield to fellow brothers when exiting in their cars from the parking lot.
Reminds me of a poet:
Dard kuch maloom hai ye loag sab
kis taraf se aye thay, keedhar chalay
It is more about the language and words used like kiss my ass etc, there are numerous instances where the hijabis are flipping birds and saying eff America and stuff. Uncivilized language is not going to help anyone. Even a repugnant racist like Spencer uses civilized language. Then she goes on to make it a Muslim issue and is saying she can use abusive language because she is radicalized as a Muslim. I would not bother with her if she hadn’t thrown the Muslim wrench in it.
Just a sense of entitlement and spoilt brats looking for attention, she is getting 32k as an honorarium to be the union official. I dont think they will expel her, they might remove her from the SU.
