I checked the second article you posted. The first time she addressed what the issue was (which was abstaining from Canada day celebrations on her facebook 4 months ago) she addressed in a polite way. It is the backlash she received from that that made her say for white fragility to kiss her ass. This is what I mean when I say that whites do not like “uppity” people of color. Also, really? The issue that is hurting your feelings is “uncivilized” language? Not the uncivilized ideologies that people like Dick Spencer hold but profane language and the middle finger? Boo hoo. Sure, this behavior does not look good for a leader of an organization as she could have explained it more “politely” since organizations care about image, but in the grand scheme of things this is nothing.
Also, I see a Freudian slip! She did not say she is radicalized as a Muslim, but racialized as one. Singling out this girl as someone the Muslim community need to vehemently condemn is making a mountain out of a molehill. Literally the “worst” thing about her is that she wears a hijab and thus declare her faith that way which makes her hypervisible to harassment/singling out. She is not the Muslim Hijabi version of Dick Spencer and thus there is not reason to do “damage control.” Save that for something actually uncivilized.
It is all about public opinions and how you sell yourself and the consequences of ones actions. With her actions we lost in the battle of public opinions and the right wingers won. She should be denounced in a sense that she doesn’t represent Muslims in her hatred for the home country of her choice. She can go crazy and all walla walla as long as she does not claim it to be Muslim thing. If she does than Muslim organizations should say that it is not our position. She is making an excuse that she can be rude and obtuse because she is a victim of Islamophobia, what a load of crap. They are such Islamophobic and that is how she got elected? The president of SU is also a hijabi.
Why do we have to do PR like for every single thing? Do you really think about how every single Muslim individual represents themselves in a sort of culture war and in this specific skirmish we lost because she got called out for rightfully recognizing white fragility? Listen homie, this chick’s words are not based off of her religious views. She does not criticize Canada because it is “the land of the infidels,” she criticized it for being a colonial settler state that is oppressing the different native groups. So, she didn’t “make it a Muslim thing.” She thinks the backlash she received is because she is a hypervisible Muslim and that her doing sensitivity training for her remarks is bull**** because she is at the receiving end of actual racism/bigotry (Islamophobia). It’s not that deep, and it is definitely not the responsibility of Muslims to address every meanie that has a platform but no real negative consequences. Why do we have to say “this chick does not represent how Muslims feel about Canada”? Shouldn’t that be some ****ing common sense that an entire religious group is not a monolith? Listen dude, whites are going to dehumanize us regardless. Normal Muslims should find the root causes for actual problems in our communities and focus on it to better ourselves as a collective and not because of seeking white approval and going against right wingers in some dumbass “battle.” More importantly, normal Muslims should conduct their lives and not have to be on PR duty.
What is and what should be are two different things. Her actions have added a lot to anti muslim sentiments. I don’t delve into right and wrong, I just worry about consequences, as more and more people get pissed off they elect more and more politicians who are anti muslims who then make immigration harder, it becomes harder to get jobs, community lives on fringes of society, foreign policy becomes against muslims etc. It is more about smart and dumb and here we are facing an adversary who is really smart. Pakistanis here used to thrive and now they are becoming the poorest ethnicity, so people like her can go to town and many will pay the price.
How would you feel if all the whites said the same thing and did not oppose the supremacists and Nazis could say whatever against you without being challenged by fellow whites?
Here is the thing though: *she is not contributing to this.
*She will be a blip on the radar in the grand scheme of things. It is the rapes, terrorist attacks, and other criminal behavior committed by Pakistanis and other groups of Muslims in general that will be used as ammo against our people by far right wing/right wing politicians. Also, most whites already do a piss poor job of cleaning up the worst of their kind, as evidenced by the fact that liberal whites in the US are already talking about “free speech for everyone, even Nazis!” while the GOP are ignoring the fact that their party is heading more towards the right. For God’ sake, people honestly think that groups that actively fight neo-Nazi groups/other far right groups are “just as bad.”
This girl is not the equivalent of Nazis on our side. The girl, with the worst interpretation of her, is an overzealous activist but people make of her more than she actually is because she is a hijabi and they want to wank to their Islamophobia. That is it. Her controversy will be forgotten by the media once the hype dies down.
I guarantee you, if every Pakistani and/or Muslim starting acting right today and started saying things that white people wanted to hear, they would still dehumanize us. Many Pakistani people in my community are stand up people. We have assimilated into American society and we have a positive impact in our communities. While we generally have a good reception (to our faces, anyways) there are still white people raving about “look at these mudslime enterin’ our cumoonities!!1”
The white people wanking off to this are not going to give a **** about Muslims who do not agree with this girl. They took this issue and ran with it, despite it not being a big deal. This is not going to turn whites who are sympathetic and supportive of us to the other side, this incident is just temporary wank material for right wingers because they do not like us and probably never will.
Let me repeat myself: The Pakistani community needs to focus on actual problems in our communities like derailing crime and terrorist sympathizers along with misogyny and homophobia, among other issues.
