…muslims can shorten their prayers i.e. ‘Qasr Namaz’.
I want to know if this is compulsory? Can someone say their full namaz during travel if they want (or this would be considered a sin knowing they can say Qasr Namaz?).
I am asking this on someone’s behalf so I would really appreciate authentic references.
(I think this section has more traffic than religion, but mods can move the thread if necessary).
Allah has given us this leniency out of his generosity. it’s a ne’mat from Allah to us. NOT using it constitutes “Kufraan-e-ne’mat” … doing full prayers will NOT get you extra rewards but Allah’s displeasure instead. observing Qasr is the right thing to do and it will iA fetch you more reward.
Thanks kkf, I would observe this namaz if I was traveling but like I said it’s for someone else I am asking.
Is there any reference that says not dong it would be a sin?
Yahya b. Umayya said:
I told 'Umar bin al-Khattab that Allah had said:" You may shorten the prayer only if you fear that those who are unbelievers may afflict you" (Qur’an, iv. 101), whereas the people are now safe. He replied: I wondered about it in the same way as you wonder about it, so I asked the Messenger of Allah about it and he said: It is an act of charity which Allah has done to you, so accept His charity.

Book 6, Hadeeth 4
It was narrated that Ya’la bin Umayyah said:
“I said to 'Umar bin Al-Khattab: ‘There is no sin on you if you shorten salah and if you fear that the disbelievers may put you in trial (attack you). But now the people are safe.’ 'Umar said: 'I wondered the same thing, so I asked the Messenger of Allah about that and he said: This is a favor from Allah (SWT) to you, so accept His favor.” (Sahih)
