Which web-based e-mail account

can be configured with Microsoft Outlook. I’d prefer to use Microsoft Outlook to send and recieve e-mail - it’d make life much easier for me. I know Hotmail and Yahoo! want you to upgrade (by payment, ofcourse) for this to be enabled on Outlook.

I’d sign up with any that allows the web-based email account to be configured with Outlook.

Any suggestions?

Re: Which web-based e-mail account

I was wrong about Hotmail, i've managed to configure it! I prefer using Yahoo though.

Re: Which web-based e-mail account

Gmail. (Through SSL/TLS)

Gawab normal POP/SMTP

Re: Which web-based e-mail account

thanks! there is only one concern though. Are attachments checked for viruses before uploaded or downloaded when using it through Outlook? I'm not sure if hotmail is doing this through outlook.

Re: Which web-based e-mail account

If you are using Outlook, then any half-decent anti-virus suite should include email scanning as well. I don't use Outlook anymore, but when I did use OE, I'd get both Hotmail and Gmail imported in it and it was scanned by Norton.

Re: Which web-based e-mail account

^ thanks,

So which one would you reccommend? GMAIL or Gawab?

Re: Which web-based e-mail account

^ oye do you really have to ask that? Use GMAIL, ofcourse.

Re: Which web-based e-mail account

What is gawab?

Anyway, yahoo supports many features (like html) that gmail doesn't support
but then it depends upon what you are trying to use the email for...

Re: Which web-based e-mail account

^ Excuse me, but Gmail has html support. Plus a lot of other very nifty features, including no lame signature added to sent messages, and un-intrusive ads.

I use Gmail. Never used (or heard about) Gawab. Yahoo sucks because Yahoo allows your account to be spamed a lot, even when you don't give out your email address at all. Hotmail is not bad (from a spamming pov). But once you get used to GMail's conversational thread layout, everyother email system looks silly.

Re: Which web-based e-mail account

Gmail has few advantages over others, I prefer gmail because its TSL/SSL based, meaning u are not broadcasting your username & password over the internet.

I have asked few people who used Gawab & they were pretty happy with the service, gawab is on the scene well before gmail but as u can see from their main page they dont advertise their POP function (though it is provided).

As far as email scanning is concerned for antivirus purpose, even AVG (free antivirus) has a very good email scan engine.

Re: Which web-based e-mail account

^ thanks, i'll download AVG onto my PC. BTW there is no option for registering with GMAIL at the moment? I heard you have to be reccommended by a person who is currently using GMAIL?

Re: Which web-based e-mail account

I've tried configuring the GAWAB account with Oulook but doesn't seem to work?

coolmunda_2000

did u check their help page? Let me know if the help page doesn't exactly help u.

make sure u use ur full email address as ur username in Outlook.

I prefer not to use OutLook, I am using Thunderbird for my POP mails.

Re: Which web-based e-mail account

^ the tutorial was very useful, it is coming up with the following error messages:

'the pop3 email account u created does not suppprt SPA, verify account properties.

Re: Which web-based e-mail account

yeah i'm also using the full email address as my username

Re: Which web-based e-mail account

I'm using a dial-up connection, will this have anything to do with it?

Re: Which web-based e-mail account

^ Cutting / pasting emoticons didn’t work in gmail? :stuck_out_tongue:

Btw, if your email got in any wrong places, i can bet you that your gmail account can get spammed too. Believe me I know.

Re: Which web-based e-mail account

SPA = Secure Password Authentication

Please check ur settings .... in Outlook click on

Tools >>> Email Accounts >>> Email/View or change existing email accounts

Select the one u created for Gawab & click on "Change"

Now u will see the details of ur account, in the bottom left u will see "SPA", make sure its not checked.

Re: Which web-based e-mail account

^ I tried that, but still didn't work :(

This is a bit difficult but try this to check if u are logging in correctly or not.

Open a DOS prompt

type

telnet pop3.gawab.com 110

you will get
**
Connected to pop3.gawab.com.
Escape character is '^]'.
+OK Hello there.
**
Type
user [email protected]

it should say
+OK Password required.
type
PASS yourpassword

if u see userlogged in ... then type "LIST" see what u get (should print some numbers etc).

finally type
QUIT

If this procedure works fine, ur account on the server is working, its not a server side fault.

This is what I got when I tried to login

*-ERR Login failed - POP3 is not enabled for your account, you need to upgrade your account to be able to use POP3. *

If this happens u should contact Gawab support/help.
