You do not have to prove non-existence. If you believe in mermaids, then YOU have to demonstrate their existence. You cannot say that mermaids exist since no one has prove their non-existence. I am not advocating for atheists. Just saying what they think about religion.
If you go back only 500 years and tell people that you can see on a screen what’s happening half way around the world with a few seconds delay and instantly talk to anyone around the world and that you can fly in the air at great speeds, they would probably think you’ve lost it and burn you for sorcery. For most people, you have to see it to believe it or hear from someone they think is credible enough to believe in what he is saying.
Most atheists I know do not ‘detest’ any religion. They just think it is stupid to believe in one.
