It became relevant because it is an example of things that requires a myriad of allegories and metaphors to explain things because literal explanations are illogical. On the other hand, people take other parts of religion at their literal meaning, creating a contradiction. Noah’s ark is an example of this, that’s all.
I don’t think atheists detest religion. Some detest extreme variations of religion but most simply don’t care about religion. Just like you and I don’t care about Buddhism, or Shintoism, or Judaism, they don’t care about any religion. It doesn’t mean they detest them.
