Re: Which cities you have lived in by far and which one is your favorite???

Does ANYONE enjoy Riyadh?

I don’t think I’ve ever come across a person who’d like to settle there if it weren’t for work :hmmm:

Re: Which cities you have lived in by far and which one is your favorite???

my Bro liked Riyadh. my Bhabhi liked even more. i think Riyadh was their first city to live in outside India…they were kinda impressed with the luxuries there.

Re: Which cities you have lived in by far and which one is your favorite???

Not quite

Traditional in terms of housing and architecture.. The people themselves aren’t known for being traditional here though..

Re: Which cities you have lived in by far and which one is your favorite???

My dad liked Jeddah but not Riyadh at all.. this was more than 20 years ago.. I’ve never been to Saudi..

Re: Which cities you have lived in by far and which one is your favorite???

the list of places I have spent some time in for work is even longer. these were all places I have lived at.
a lot of miles for work but smaller hops now, used to do a lot of europe and asia trips but changed roles after kids

Re: Which cities you have lived in by far and which one is your favorite???

My parents liked it. things have changed since we lived there but it did not have a lot to offer culture and entertainment wise, even one TV channel with little programming, and locals were not the friendliest in general… they were okay. on its own it would have been fine, but because we went back to London for summer the contrast was quite significant. I had a good time their but it was because of friends, not because of the place.

I’ve lived in the same city my entire life :hinna:

Does suburb hopping count?

Re: Which cities you have lived in by far and which one is your favorite???

Durban, South Africa - Born here, lived here until i was 5. Iv only been back to South Africa once ever since but im making it a point to visit in december time, when its summer over there. My dad said he was happiest when he was living here.

Edinburgh, Scotland - Grew up here, when to high school, uni etc over here. Very multicultural for its size. I have friends from almost every type of background. Grew up in an arabic neighbourhood. My social circle is here and this is home for me. I love going into town or work and seeing world famous attractions that people from all over the world flock to see that we take for granted.

Its a tough call but because i love the outdoors, Durban. Although sadly the house i was born in is no longer there.

Edinburgh as nice as it is, isnt a cheap place to live

Re: Which cities you have lived in by far and which one is your favorite???

Karachi (where I spent my wonder years, aka high school and stuff)

Greece

Dubai

New York

All of those places have special memories for me at the time I was there.

Re: Which cities you have lived in by far and which one is your favorite???

You lived in Greece?? How was that?

Re: Which cities you have lived in by far and which one is your favorite???

It was pretty great. It was for a year, and I was a kid. We lived way out in the burbs, very quiet out there. Weekends would be great to go to the beach or even island hopping etc. We also had a lot of family visit us during that year, so it was a lot of fun.

Re: Which cities you have lived in by far and which one is your favorite???

That sounds so cool. I’m totally jealous. Did you go see any of the ancient buildings and such?

Re: Which cities you have lived in by far and which one is your favorite???

haha yeah went to The Acropolis a few times, whenever we had guests :hehe:

Re: Which cities you have lived in by far and which one is your favorite???

I’ve heard Essex is quite a posh place with people who have Queen’s English type of accents. Is it true? It does sound quite traditional.

Re: Which cities you have lived in by far and which one is your favorite???

My list is quite boring

Re: Which cities you have lived in by far and which one is your favorite???

Parts of it are expensive but I wouldn’t call it ‘posh’ as the wealthier people are mostly sports stars and business people who’ve worked their way up from the bottom to the top (rather than those who are highly educated).. On the estate where my parents live one million is about the starting figure for a home and that would only get you something very basic.. Average is 2-3 mill.. It’s mostly footballers, business ppl and their families.. That pic I posted is my patch which has apartments rather than houses so it’s much more modest, though in terms of outside evironment it’s similar..

The sterotypical Essex accent is actually considered quite common lol

Re: Which cities you have lived in by far and which one is your favorite???

It seems ok by far. Very family oriented, green, quiet, have large population of muslims and desis, good schools and unis, tons of jobs, cheap real state etc. basically everything that makes a nice suburban life. We don’t have kids yet so I do feel kindda out of place and bored being from NYC but hopefully that will change in coming years.

Dude that is up for debate
p.s. I am from karachi :snooty:

Sorry can’t figure out which one is your most favorite in the list :hehe: I also have all my childhood and teenage memories associated with Riyadh.

No, there are people who like it. My dad still thinks it’s the bestest place to live and raise a family, but my parents are in the age where they prefer the honor of going to Makkah and Madinah every 2,3 months then any other luxury. My 2 brothers are settled there with their families but they were also born there, very good with spoken arabic, know all the right people at the right places etc.
My observation by far is that if you have a family you are going to like it as there are no taxes so lots of savings, minimal to no inflation, 2 hr flight to homeland, all the luxuries of life available etc. but it’s very difficult for a single person to survive as there are not many entertainment options available. Also if you don’t like being treated like dirt then it’s going to be a challenge also as the locals don’t show any regards for desis.

Re: Which cities you have lived in by far and which one is your favorite???

We also have a Dhoraji colony in karachi where majority of the population is Bohras/Bohris, not sure if it’s the same as Dhorra.

Re: Which cities you have lived in by far and which one is your favorite???
