One thing I fail to understand is that, if there are some flaws in the development carried out by kamal, what is stoping ppp from rectifying those faults and improving the situation in the city?

You mean, Rs. 250 billions spent by world class # 2 mayor by creating ugly and defective structures be rectified by PPP? This will require another 2 decades with Rs 500 billions to rectify the screwed up structures, is it do you want to say? Karachi always needed honest and neutral Nazim like Niamatullah Khan, served whole Karachi without discrimination and maintained Karachi superbly by spending only a fraction of what that corrupt, prejudice, terrorist, incompetent # 2 world class mayor had spent.

Another gift by super duper world class mayor to Karachi, rain water and sewerage mixed flowing on the main roads due to faulty sewerage systems. In 1967, rains fell an average of 5"per day for few days. The rain water disappeared from the main roads soon after rain stopped. Now a few inches of rain, the main roads in Karachi become inundated with water which ultimately mix with sewerage flowing on the roads.

As far my memory goes, the main roads were same as of 1967, may be modified or expanded.

Forget about MA Jinah Road , which was overlooked by CDGK during its tenure inspite of the fact that it is the main root for public transport (including our very own W-11), but no one can forget renovation & repair work during Mustafa Kamal’s tenure on I.I. Chundrigar Road (the most important road of Karachi). CDGK spent around Rs 250 Million in 2007 for repair specially to overcome the sewerage problems.

Due to unplanned work and not considering the repair of link roads, the problem of sewerage could not be resolved properly.

Actually the traffic problem could not be solved through new flyovers / under passes costing Rs 250 Billion. Karachi needs a Mass Transit system catering majority of public using public transport instead of flyovers / under passes/signal free corridors which are used by limited number of ppl having private vehicles.

Agreed. System like Bombay Metro Subway, can solve great many problems.

On top of that Karachi needs to be expanded. It can never be managed as one city. It should be expanded into two or three cities in a planned manner. However the Qabza groups are already grabbing the lands in peripheries making fake housing schemes and then fighting between armed groups for land making it difficult for city to grow as it should.

Karachi be divided in to five cities having their own mayor or Nazim. Center city may keep its original name, rest four cities be created accordingly for better management. Qabza group should be eliminated asap. We don't need bhatta collectors or other criminals in Karachi. This is need of time.

Fortunately or unfortunately that area was not “developed” by the mayor in question, there may have been some renovation of some sort but not like digging out completely then re-done, lets not stretch every traffic/road problem to the mayor regardless of how much we hate the associated party. If any of under-pass is suffering from flooding then I will join in the condemnation of the design/works under him.
I agree, Karachi needs a big time mass-transit improvement, roads/fly-overs are going to be short term solutions and require honest/sincere work from the traffic police/police to maintain smooth flow of traffic. Improving sewerage system around the city will require grand scale work like they did for fly-overs/under-passes.

**Rainwater submerges roads, underpasses, flyovers in Karachi **
**KARACHI: All the tall claims of City District Government Karachi, Karachi Water and Sewerage Board and Town Administration regarding effective measures to cope with the aftermath of monsoon rains has been exposed as heavy downpours lashed out in the city on Monday.
The torrential rain submerged all the lanes, streets and roads and the ongoing development schemes, mainly the under construction underpasses and flyovers turned into ’swimming pool’.
The rain water accumulated on the construction site of Gharibabad and Naziamabad underpasses, National Stadium flyover, Hasan Square flyover and Sohrab Goth flyover thus presenting view of swimming pools.
A source in the city government said that the Works and Services Department had informed the KWSB on Sunday morning that a crack had developed on the manhole of 42-inch dia sewerage pipeline along the Liaquatabad underpass. The KWSB had also been asked to repair manhole of 12-ich dia sewerage pipeline along Ghariabad Underpass.
Source said that the KWSB had not repaired the said manholes on Sunday which consequently caved in and the sewerage and flood water filled into the underpasses.
The situation became worst at Liaquatabad underpass when landslide occurred on Sunday. The sewage and rain water of F.B. Area was to be disposed into Lyari River through trunk sewerage system but due to the broken manhole, the flooded water was disposing into Liaquatabad underpass where 17-feet water had accumulated, source mentioned.
“The city government has started works at the underpasses on emergency basis and brought 10 tankers and 12 pumping machines to drain out the accumulated rain water but it would take three to four days,” sources said.
The stipulated time for the completion of the underpass was August 14, 2006 but, now it would be furthered delayed by 20 to 30 days, source said.
The rainwater also inundated on Jehangir Road, University Road, Business Recorder Road, Manghopir Road, Shahrah-e-Noorjehan, Shershah Soori Road, Shahrah-e-Faisal etc.
Source further added that the KWSB had cleaned major portion of 41 storm water drains, however town administration failed to clean the small water drains thus creating havoc.**
