Re: Where are you going on your honeymoon?
shay, the sad thing is, the hubs accidently dropped the laptop so 60% of our trip pics are stuck on the harddrive! :/
im so hoping they can be recovered because theres soooo much more!
sahar, we flew out to paris on zoom airways (awesome service, and $1400 roundtrip for two including taxes and upgrades) and picked up our rental car there.
basically, we had the car, a map of europe with all the highways and roadways, we had the hubs' laptop, and we had two suitcases. we also had a vague timeline cos we wanted to meet his family at some point so we had to get to eastern europe at some point.
and that was it! we'd wake up each morning, look at the map and figure out where we wanted to go, and then we'd drive. we had our iPod with all the tunes and an adaptor for the car so we'd plug it in.
it was amazing!
we ended up seeing the austrian alps, the swiss alps and the italian alps- stunning, stunning views.
so we started in paris (france - what can i say about paris... LOVED IT! versailles is GORGEOUS and paris just has this different feel to it... i would move there in a heartbeat) > heidelburg (france - very pretty little town, extremely picturesque with a river running though it and a 400 year old castle) > nuremburg (germany - ridiculous store names like Christ (jewellery store) and Mister Lady (clothing store lol) > strasbourg (germany - THE most stunning cathedral i have ever seen) > plzen (czech republic - our hotel was 400 years old!) > prague (czech republic - we overstayed because it was so stunning... and the shopping is great too. we also walked up to prague castle's fruit orchards and had the juiciest, sweetest pears right off the tree!) > cluj napoca (romania - his family's hometown) > monostor (romania - his grandparent's village- soooo beautiful and old... the church there dates to the 1100's!) > budapest (hungary - budapest is stunning also) > pecs (hungary) (this was the site of one of the oldest mosques in the world, i believe... it was built in the 1600's and was a church but got converted into a mosque when the Turks invaded, and then back into a church when they were driven out... but its still got the blue mosaic ceiling for the dome, and the Kalma from when it was a mosque- very cool!) > graz (austria - best.creme brulee.ever) > venice (italy - old, dirty, falling away but an unmistakable charm) > milano (italy - super stylie, lots of pigeons, beautiful church) > cinque terre (italy - the beach!!!) > geneva (switzerland - we stopped for dessert. pricey as all hell) > dijon (france - beautiful countryside and LOTS of cows!) > then back to paris for a few more days and to catch our flight out.
lawchick, one more thing- make sure you know when the cities/towns you're visiting have their off days... its not always the weekend, like in north america. for instance, the louvre is closed on tuesdays and versailles is closed on mondays. milano is shut down on a sunday- very few shops are open and almost no restaurants.
all in all, roadtripping is expensive with a car but SO worth it! it was the trip of a lifetime and im so happy we got to do it!! i highly, highly recommend it.
