When Pakistanis are grouped with Indians

Re: When Pakistanis are grouped with Indians

Well..i have indian friends..and nothing against them. In fact..we get along well. Full stop is politics. I am not kinda person who likes to talk about politics with Indians. Until..they say something which they weren’t suppose to..about Pakistan..everything is good. And yes it did happen..and Indians love to discuss Pakistan. And most of them have bollywood perception of Pakistanis..which is negative. Secondly..i am not “patriot” Pakistani…coz Nationalism is forbidden in our religion. So i wouldn’t say… “I am proud to be Pakistani”. As for our background, as most Pakistanis..yes we are Indians…from our forefathers..no doubt about that…but lines are drawn. My parents and i were born in Pakistan..so we are Pakistanis.

why so serious girly? :flowers:

Re: When Pakistanis are grouped with Indians

This is not about that identity complex thing. My question is from a another perspective. Let’s say if you are in a community where people are being grouped based on their countries and Pakistanis and Bengalis are grouped as Indians, what will you think about it? its like labelling Australians as Brits or Koreans as Chinese.

Re: When Pakistanis are grouped with Indians

ap common ppl k perspective se bat kr rhay hain na k shayd new place zyada joyful ho as compared to old,but main ne sath ‘true patriot’ ki bat ki hai,or true patriot k liye us k apny ghar us k mulk se zyada koi jagah exciting nhi ho skti..

Re: When Pakistanis are grouped with Indians

thanks for the flower :):)
main serious hona chahti hoon bhai. aur bhi cheezein hain..aur bhi gham hain zamane mein. shayad iss liye mood off. agar koi aur forum hota aap ko iss comment ke liye no matter how nice it is warning milta because its off topic. i got 2 in one day. record hoga lol. but im saying ke agar koi log aise cheezein karna chahein unka poora haq hai. It’s important to be consistent. If some people don’t want to be grouped with Indians then don’t say “hum sab ek hain” when in West discrimination occurs aur allies ki zaroorat hai and say we all should work against that..then try to distance yourself and show you have little similarities with Indians. i’m not saying they have to all think like me but keep your views consistent.

Re: When Pakistanis are grouped with Indians

Your title said if Pakistanis are grouped with Indians not as Indians. I mean that makes it slightly different. Obviously it is wrong if Pakistanis are called Indians or Indians are called Pakistanis. No Indian I know disputes that Pakistan and Pakistanis are separate. If in a small country there are 2000 Indians and 1000 Pakistanis they will be labelled together as asians and seen together. It happened in Uganda when both Indians and Pakistanis were forced to leave and it happens in UK and US where they are both seen as asians or south asians. In some countries people are grouped according to region rather than countries which might be specific. Australia and Britain example does not work as they are different continents. Koreans and Chinese would not like to be confused but they can agree they are Asians. They have an asian federation which works for then. French, German and Italians don’t mind being labelled as Western Europeans.

As an Australian i can tell you that though Aussies joke about Brits all the time many are proud of their British past and still pledge allegiance to the British Queen. Some of them would be happy to be called British. So even that might not be the best example.

Which community (in the West) groups people according to which country they are originally from? Maybe you mean an Arab country? In the West you belong to the land you live in. If you live in the US you are American and if in the UK are British. Your other identity only becomes important to people if you make it. So are you talking about an organisation doing the labelling, the gov labelling them together for the census or people on the street assuming you’re Indian?

In your example maybe they were labelling it as the Indian subcontinent rather than calling all Indians and Pakistanis Indians.

Re: When Pakistanis are grouped with Indians

True har kisi ka alag andaaz hai. I am khush ke aap patriotic hain. Achi baat hai. Bahut zyaada patriotic logon ko apne mulk mein hi rehna chaiye jaise woh usko better karein. Aur jo OP baat kar rahein hain woh un logon ke baare mein hain jo bahar jaate hain jahan Indians hain …tauba tauba ..Bangladeshi log, white people aur aur bhi log hain. Wahan pe aap ko door se hamesha Pakistani roop mein nahi dekhenge. Agar koi Pakistan mein hai to yeh Indian ka sawal aata hi nahi

Re: When Pakistanis are grouped with Indians

Mmm Ive actually thought about this before. I think in the west people tend to think the muslims are Pakistanis and Indians are hindu. I only interact with muslims, Ive noticed Indian muslims (mostly friends) don’t mind being associated with Pakistan and tbh I consider them long lost Pakistanis lol. But hindus would def be considered Indian. … I guess it depends on what angle you take and what exposure other people in the west etc have about South Asian politics. … I tend not be called Indian (coz of the hijab) they just think some muslim chick lol. But if I was I would definitely correct them because I am patriotic but not in a OMG how dare you tone. You’ve just gotta educate people because they don’t have that exposure. … On another note, Ive noticed Pashtuns/lighter skinned Pakistanis don’t get classed as Indians because as racist as it sounds they TEND to be lighter skinned and associated with countires that are KNOWN to be fairer and more tanned Pakistanis get the Indian label (which is what Ive noticed). … But then again Ive seen really light skinned Indians get labelled as arabs etc. … Now that I think about its basically based on what the media portrays or how a group of people are shown to the masses. …Then it also comes to cultural similarities in weddings rasms etc, which people tend to class as one culture - u and I might understand the differences but to the untrained eye its the same… I don’t think you should feel necessarily negatively about, its just the way things are I guess.

Re: When Pakistanis are grouped with Indians

Yes Indian is a race. The proper name of the Indian race is Dravidian. We’re from the Dravidian group of people who inhabited India around 3,000 years ago. These Individuals were once Caucasian but coming through central Asia their skin color changed but they still retained the features of the Caucasians such as the hair and nose. These central Asians became known as Aryans in the North and Dravidian in the south.

I mean it depends on the person, if you think if someone called you bengali and you took offense becuase your skin is glistening white then to each his own. If someone called me a bengali or indian I wouldn’t care.

Re: When Pakistanis are grouped with Indians

I’m quite often mistaken for a Sikh girl. I may very well have some Sikh blood in me. Who knows…

Re: When Pakistanis are grouped with Indians

It’s all good until it comes to cricket.

Re: When Pakistanis are grouped with Indians

From what I’ve heard, the conventional wisdom is that human migrated out of Africa and settled India, but there have also been other settler from central Asia who were lighter in tone. These settlers, the Aryans, invaded India, the Middle East, as well as Europe, and some remnants of their language can be seen in words like ma, mom, which are similar across many languages. They also brought their religion which mixed with pre existing ones to form modern Hinduism.

Re: When Pakistanis are grouped with Indians

Well I think it has nothing to do with Indian or Pakistani.
Any Indian would not like to be called “Pakistani” and they would mind to be called Pakistani.

To be honest as a Pakistani (patriot) I do not mind to be associated with India because we have the same culture, heriatage and history.
But I am what I am its nothing to do with India. I would also mind or correct someone if they would call me Sri Lankan.

Sometimes I do call myself South Asian. I can live with that

Re: When Pakistanis are grouped with Indians

I don’t mind if i am called Pakistani. I can’t speak for everyone but a lot of Indian girls find it a compliment to be considered a Pakistani girl because they are seen as usually better looking. I mean i do overall i agree they are. I had a female friend who was mistaken for Pakistani as she had fair coloured eyes and she was quite flattered.

I do think you are a minority and it seems like most would prefer to be grouped with Arabs as they are fair and “good looking.” I do not think an Indian would impose a Pakistani to be seen as Indian. But if a Pakistani has sentiments ke “hum sab ek jaise hain” then they will happily bring up similarities rather than see them as different. Personally, I speak up against discrimination against Pakistanis, which unfortunately has occurred, maybe more so then i would with other nationalities as I realise we have many similarities.

Pakistanis are seen to a higher level than Indians in Middle east as they are mostly Muslim compared to Indians

Of course Arabs would never discriminate against Pakistanis officially either despite being Muslims.

Re: When Pakistanis are grouped with Indians

Really? Maybe they think you are a Sikh Angelina Jolie. I can see how people would identify a Sikh guy but a Sikh girl? Maybe you have long hair or warrior blood in you. Also, 2 of the Sikh sacred sites are in Pakistan and Indian-Pakistani Punjabis have similarities.

Re: When Pakistanis are grouped with Indians

No one has said me Indian and I dont think they if they do Im going to correct them not a big deal

And I have been getting along great with my new Indian friend nowdays so its all peaceful

Re: When Pakistanis are grouped with Indians

Is it a conscious decision to only interact with Muslims or just who you happen to come across? Is tht hard to do in the west when you’re surrounded by so may non muslims? Actually i know indian hindu girls who are flattered to be called pakistanis. It’s good you keep away from the unholy non Muslim Indians. It is best not to get too close to them in case you get contaminated. But it is totally cool to interact with non indian non muslims they won’t rub off their bad habits into you. I have met 2 Indian hijabis. And some British pakistani hijabis who identify as British more than Pakistani because you know Tony Blair’s sister in law is a hijabi. UK is a secular country as is India so nothing wrong with it. I guess they may be less common in India and UK compared to Pakistan but definitely they do exist. Also there are many proud Pakistani Hindus like Deepak Perwani. But I agree to people in the West Indians=Hindu and Pakistanis=Muslim and they are treated accordingly. I’ve had some people from the UK say “oh that’s good you’re Indian. We don’t mind Indians because they’re not…” Then i have to say actually there are both Muslims and Hindus in India and Pakistan. That one shouldnt generalise about Pakistanis as the number of good Pakistanis outnumber the negative experiences they’ve heard/come across. I definitely think you should be prouder to be mistaken as Arab than Indian. What is the point of fair skin if one can’t pass for middle eastern or Arab?

Re: When Pakistanis are grouped with Indians

Well I am a Punjabi so being mistaken for a Sikhni is a pretty good guess. You are right, Indian and Pakistani Punjabis are physically and culturally are seriously very similar and I consider them perhaps the most attractive ethnic group from South Asia. Yeah of course I am biased lol

Re: When Pakistanis are grouped with Indians

I had a feeling you were an desi Angelina Jolie lookalike and now my suspicions have been confirmed. You didnt answer whether you had long hair? jk. Could be the key to the confusion. jk. Yes yes I know Punjabis are tall, fair, attractive, are good with words etc, big hearts etc etc. I’m from Delhi but im not Punjabi so i may not have those qualities. Maybe that’s why i am more fascinated with Lahore than Karachi. I think Karachi people are very cultured and have big hearts like us non-Punjabis from Up area in India. Some say Balochi and Sindhi people are better looking. Others say Kashmiris. Sometimes i wonder what today would have been like if India-Pakistan were divided across ethnicities like Punjabis one country, Sindhis one country, non Punjabi urdu people one country etc.
