I think today is Zia’s 20 some death anniversary. I was at a birthday party of a kid of our family friends when someone turned the TV and news was coming. It was off course a shocking news, but somehow the host family was more interested in cake cutting so they turned the TV off. 
Talk about sensitivity.

Oooh, I remember! Even though I was a wee little lass back then, I was in the basement of our home when my uncle called with the news. I remember thinking why isn't he sad that someone has died.

I just remember ppl laughing at Azhar Lodhi of PTV, who said in funeral being telecasted fro PTV:
'Agar aaj sadre mumlikat zinda hote to dekhte ke unn ke janaze main kitne log aae hue hain'

I lived in Karachi those days. One my friend Hashim called me.
He said
"Mubarik ho"
I replied
" Kia Zia ul Haq mar gia hay?"
He said yes.
I checked at radio and Tv but there was no news.
Than I asked my airport fallows
They told me about C-130 accident and told abbout possibility.
A few minutes later a call from Pindi confirmed it.

I dont remember it at all. What year did it happen?
I only remember as a kid being told the mystery behind his crash, how it was not as simple as they made it look etc etc. Also have heard alot about his relationship with his mom and that was heart warming :(.

This is so hilarious. I remember his funeral telecast and Azhar Lodhi was continously it and continuously crying like a baby. That crying was probably the main reason he got axed as PTV chief, as soon as Benazir govt came.

yes and again he was seen in PTV Khabarnama during Nawaz Sharif's government. It was a common phenomenon then that with the change in government even certain actors / directors couldn't appear on state owned channel e.g. Shuja'at Hashmi playing Malik Mehrbaan (loosly inspired from Nawaz Sharif) in Shahid Mehmood Nadeems drama 'Zard Dopeher' during Benazir government could not appear on TV during Nawaz Sharif's Government.

When his plane was blasted over hot Cholistan desert near Bahawalpur in the peak of summer I was posted at Multan. While going to my home from my office near Multan Cantt. Station, at about 3:00 PM I saw tons of military rescue vehicles in convoy moving toward the site of incident, I came to know immediately that Mardood along with his 36 hawaris had burnt over cholistan desert.
Three days ago on 14 August 1988 he declared to be king of Pakistan for ever. Allah said in Holy Quraan, that the man plans but Allah is the greatest planner of all:)

I was in Saudi and heard it on TV. My first reaction was "khus kum jahan pak" and secondly I was happy that my country got rid of the worst ruler we had since independence.
I was however sad for the other soldiers who died along with him. Even in death he created destruction and so much loss of life.

Yes. In Multan people used to say "Aslam Beg nu patta si ke Pak 1 nu tabah hona hay, enay marwaya hay:) Normally such skilled jobs are carried out by inside man. There were two versions, one was that Pak 1 was blasted from ground missile and the other version which I think was more correct that some time bomb was planted in "pettis of Anwar Ratol" the famous mangoes were loaded in Pak1 at military air port Bahawalpur.:)
In the last days of his presidentship he used to travel with tons of people perhaps he knew that he would be the target soon. In Pak 1 there were 33 hawaris, 3 full US generals and Rafeal the US Ambassador to Pakistan were travelling with him. Hawaris like Akhtar Abul Rehman, were involved in Ojhrhi Camp disaster when American audit team was about to come to Pakistan, to investigate supply of banned arms to Iran from the storage at Ojrhi Camp Islamabad, the money went to contras of Nicragua fighting with government troops. It was known then that part of the money landed in the pockets of mardood Zia-ul-Haq and co. US President Regan was about to be impeached and almost lost his job.
And yes earlier to that incident poor Mohammad Khan Junejo lost his job of PM for conducting the enquiry on disaster of Ojrhi Camp where he fixed responsibilty to three active generals .
