Whats your favourite time period in History folks?
If like me you seem very out of place in the modern world or feel like you belonged in a better time… what time is that exactly?
Even if your not like that… you can still realte to or have a taste for a certain Time period, perhaps just a curiosity or maybe your really into something in particular…
What events strike you as being worth having lived in… or what world events would you have wanted to been able to witness first hand… what sort of experiences would you love or hate to get into?
Assume for a moment that I am a Time-Lord… or some nutty Genius who has built a time Machine… or that You have stumbled into the mists and found me at the other side asking you simply where would you like to go?
What would your answer be…?
Feel free to be as imaginative, wild and reckless as you like… just keep it clean folks thats all I ask you?
The 1870's...
A lot of major changes were taking place all over the world.
But for me specifically, I would love to be a part of the setting of 'Far from the Madding Crowd' (thomas hardy).
It's just beautiful... dunno if someone has read it they might understand.
Lol I guess I am just a huge fan of Hardy's. He creates such rich and believable settings, it's amazing.
^
Yeah Hardy did indeed have a lot of talent... the 1870's were an interesting time period becuase the New World and Old World were colliding at the same time... While it's true early automobiles and even aircraft were emerging... we still had a lot of the World undiscovered and there were still spectacular cultures well preserved... these days the magic is well and truly gone forever... :(
True I know that feeling… But maybe I love history too much… ever since I was a child I could bring the past to life… I used to sit and just see things in such a wierd light and it’s strange how throughout my life I can relate things to past events… very wierd.
I would like to think I belong to the Medieval world, but perhaps Allah willed that I be employed elsewhere…
My favourite time period is probably the 11-12th Century… Chainmail, swords, bows and shields… not to mention the horses.
Actaully Brother the Ottomans were still expanding right up till the 1800's and the Sudan and Afghanistan inflicted terrible defeats on the British imperial armies.
Not even the Mongols could stop the Islamic empire... and India flourished under the Moguls at least up till the 1700's.
So the Golden age of Islam did last a long time... I think it only started going downhill after the 19th century before then the Islamic world seemed relentless. :)

What does expansion have to do with the Golden Age? The golden age was about advancement in sciences, technology etc. I can't recall many major creations, discoveries or explorations.

Aaw I see your point now. Yes your quite right but in terms of Golden age I took you literally to mean a time of power and expansion... ussually when people say Golden age they mean an age when they were at the top... In regards to science yes your right Islamic science has gone downhill... however it did fuel all the other sciences and is one of the reasons for the Renaisance of the West.
Ussually when people say the Golden age of Islam though they tend to mean the Ottoman empire, the Mughals of India, the vast trade networks such as Silk Road and Far Eastern gold trade... etc.
However in terms of Science your right I would agree with you that after the 13th Century it all slided downhill.... sadly. :(
From a religious POV I wish I was alive during the time of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW). It would have been incredible to see those events and see the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) infront of my own eyes. And who knows, I might have been a better Muslim :hinna:
I love the new world and the old world. I find it incredible, the pace of innovation and the technologies of the 18th, 19th, 20th and 21st century. The world as we know it emerged through the 18th and 19th century. Although if I was alive at the cusp of change not that you can pinpoint a particular decade or few decades as the cusp, I don’t think I’d be overwhelmed or have appreciated the events as much as I do now. So yeah an incredible period. Definitely ranks up there.
Plus if I could evewr serve in the army of any man… I would love to have served in the service of Rasool Allah, and if I could ever have served a great warrior or been given a chance to even learn from one such man then without a doubt I would have jumped at the chance to follow HAzrat Kahlid Bin Waleed RAdi Allahhu Anhu… the worlds greatest commander of troops 300 battles no defeats.
But for me specifically, I would love to be a part of the setting of 'Far from the Madding Crowd' (thomas hardy).

yes I have and I have also seen the tv play
this was thomas hardy's 1st literary success
This was perhaps according to many Historians the greatest period in Indian History. Certainly if one looks at the Mughal legacy not just in Architecture and Arts but in everything from the currency to the food we eat in the Subcontinent the Mughals had a massive influence and one can argue they still influence the region even though the last Mughals had long since rotted away as a force centuries ago…
