I assume you’re referring to practicing Muslim male when you say maulvi. I had similar friend in college back in Pakistan and I met them all when I visited Pakistan last year. We hung out, talked about what was going on with our life. The only bad part was when they’d advise me on religion and praying but in their defense they didn’t know about me being an agnostic.

These guys did stay true to religious convictions for the most part like trying to not look at the ladies, praying and other bits. Which is not to say they’re not interested in girls. We just talked about it in a different fashion. Like, when are you getting married, yada yada yada. Not saying they’re perfect but they’re cool people to hang out with for the most part(talking about my bearded friends here).

I was visiting Casablanca doing a trade show and made friends with some young ladies there, this maulvi participant would loudly say Lahul when he saw me walk by with girls. One day we heard screaming from the admin tent and turned out that the Maulvi assaulted a young lady who turned out to be the mistress of Ambassador of Pakistan. The ambassador was this General guy who was very close to Zia. I heard he was a real womanizer. I have done the religious drill and tableghi rai wind route and some of my friends were enforcers for JI militant branch called Ansar Ul Muslimeen and I also met with the killer commander sarwar(If I remeber his name correctly) etc. Never came across one I admired as a human.
