What's the obsession with "Gori"?

There’s definatly some obsession with gori girls in Indo-Pak. You listen to old Indian,Pakistan to songs from the 50’s era to now, one word is on rampage when describing girl’s beauty in a song and that is “gori”. “Teri gori kaliyan and something something mujhey kiya jai behaal”. Whada hell is this? Though, Pakistani POP music I found the least one with this phenomena.
Why can’t the lyricists praise a dark skined girl?

Then if you come toward movies you must know that the leading lady must be “gori”. Though there are some dark skinned girls but the make up guys make sure to put enough “surkhi-powder” on her face to make her gori and technically ready for the upcomming pathetic monotonous “gori ke payal” song.

Oscar nominated film Lagaan has a song “O guriya”. Here is a hero who’s leading a fight because of skin discrimination issues and himself is obsessed with his girl being “gori”. Don’t tell me that her name was Gori to begin with and thus he’s justified. Then why not name her “Kali” and sing “O Kalia”.

Dramas are definatly not spared either. Pakistani dramas have an overwhelming load of gori gori girls and i’m thinking that so does Indian dramas. There are some fair skinned girls like Maria Wasti, Vaneeza, Moona Liza etc but then again the makeup rule must apply one them. Sania Saeed is probably the only fair skinned actress in our dramas who’s proud the way she looks and appears and likes to appear the same way on screen.

God help the rest.

fact is an average viewer like's to see a fair skinned girl on screen. so you can't really blame the media for being so racist.

make sure you marry a non gori.

I always found this annoying about us Pakistani’s, we for some reason assume that lighter skin means better looking

Though i can’t really talk, i am marrying a almost goree looking girl :mudhosh:

Yeah, I agree there is an obsession with fair skin. But this is how things are. It is not that dark skinned gals are not appreciated, but scuh instances are rare.
I can recall just one song......."Saawali saloni teri jheel si aankhen"
But for "gori" ....there are innmerable of them.
Fair skin is preferred over a dark one.....most of the times....sad but it is a fact.

forget gori kallie kerma walle :)

it is sooo annoyinnn :yukh:
i dont really care abt kaalay goray ppl…i mean in the looks
if they have attractive featuress then i consider them good lookin :rotato:

thats exactly why i love the song "Sanwali Saloni see Mehbooba" by Vital Signs :D

What about the song “Kaala Shah Kaala” :hehe:

^That is not in reference to a girl, but a guy.

i know i just thought no1 really has noticed this obsession in our culture about being “gori”, even when u visit pakistan u dont have to watch the movies/dramas to get a hint of goraism ur own family/friends are at it,
moreover have you seen the ridiculous bleach cream jo aap ko gora bana day gai!!:nahnah:

they are just soo awful especially the ones where the girl is complaining about how dark she is and then as soon as she uses bleach cream, wow her life changes, and sum guy always cums in the picture!:smack:

i just thought of another gori song-goray rang ka zamana kabhi hoga na purana???

is this for real, i mean does it actually indicate towards how good it is to be goree???

What's the obsession with "Gori"?

I think ppl always want what they can't have. Since in Pakistan and India the majority of ppl are not that "gorey", so that's why they think that fair skinned ppl are like the most beautiful ppl on this planet. This kinds of stuff happens everywhere, for ex. ppl in US die for tan and will spend numerous amount of dollars to get that tan, which i find very awkward. NO one is happy with what they got! I mean i have straight hair, which is very appealing to a lots ppl but i pay $95 just to get them perm, because i can’t stand my straight hair. It’s in human nature to be always unthankful and take things for granted.

P.S. I think something is wrong with this following statement.

** There are some fair skinned girls like Maria Wasti, Vaneeza, Moona Liza etc but then again the makeup rule must apply one them. Sania Saeed is probably the only fair skinned actress in our dramas who's proud the way she looks and appears and likes to appear the same way on screen.**

Junaid bahi played it safe and diplomatic by singing Sanwali Saloni se mehboob and Gorey rang ka zamana.

But regardless of the nature both songs are my favorite.

Shani12 - Gori not necessarily refers to the skin color of a girl, It can be her name or a praise for beauty or a praise for her color. It also doesn't mean the lyrics is racist. Because I have seen lyrics using the Word 'Saawri' or 'Saawli' For black and it is considered equally beautiful.

Girl: Mera gora bannay ka sapna, such howa.
Guy: Howa.
Girl: Jub mold girl cream bleach nay, mujhay chowa.
Guy: Chuwa.
Girl Buss pandra minute mein ho gayi mein gori gori.
Guy: Gori gori.
Girl: Mold girl cream bleach say gori gori.
Aap bhi cream bleach use karya and or apni rungat ko kejaya gori gori.

That is right I guess. Gori.....sometimes it is just used in reference to a beautiful girl.

yes, my point exactly. Song after song of praising the girl's beauty and her skin by using the word gori. There is an abundance of gori titled songs but kali and sanwali etc are a rarity. And this isn't an abosession?

Yeah, I have already admitted that it is an obsession......in my previous posts. But beautiful girl can be dark skinned one too. I just backed Asif_K coz he pointed out.....Gori word used in songs doesn't always mean Fair skinned....it also refers to beautiful girl....who cud either be fair....or cud be dark.

Shani12 - Song Writers always use their own Imagination when they write lyrics - Mostly they will use the word 'GORI' to describe women feminism, beauty etc. At the same time they will use the word 'SaaNvaria' or something like that to describe Men Machoism and I dont think we should read too much into it.

That said I do believe that people all over the world world think that White skin is more beautiful than Black, why single out the song writers then ?
