What's in your lipstick?

i think i am going to puke.

i was reading something on a website yesterday, i did save the link; it was either from Netscape or MSN (you know after you sign out of hotmail, they have those news links on the MSN signing-off website). They stated that there was a new measure being implemented to ensure that consumers knew which lipsticks contained a particular ingredient. i had to read twice to make sure i was reading properly; apparently, according to the news website i read (can’t find the link now but it was dated 22 July), cow brains are used as one of the ingredients in lipsticks. They did not specify which brands, it seemed as though they were referring to all lipsticks.

Someone was arguing in the article that there was an extremely minimal risk of humans contracting mad cow disease based upon the presence of cow brains in the lipsticks. The chances of this are extremely low, probably better probability of you getting hit by lightning. Yet the fact that cow brains are utilized to make lipsticks - oh my God. Was anyone aware of this ?

Someone please tell me this is not true. This is gross beyond description. i don’t even like to look at meat that’s lying on the kitchen counter let alone digest a small part of cow brains via your lipstick. i mean - they couldn’t find another synthetic ingredient in substitution ? Is this normal?

you r boring

i'm a fun guppan :o

If you were female and used lipsticks, you would be as horrified as i am. Imagine if you read today that cow intestines are used in shaving cream...... wouldn't you puke? It's the same concept. Infact, it's worse for females because lipsticks actually go on our lips and by extension a small bit is inevitably swallowed via saliva. Shaving cream just stays on your face.

Is no one else horrified? Imagine eating cow brains, people... ugh.

The new measure is there to prohibit the use of cow brains. So you don't need to worry about it anymore :)

Plus, since I work for a lipstick manufacturer, I'm trying to dig up more info on it right now.

Maddy the ever rational scientist,

The article was only discussing the future implementation of this step. It did not mention when this measure would be adopted. And, this does not discount the fact that millions if not billions of females have already swallowed some bit of cow brains, unintentionally, for all these years. i mean, all these lipstick corps should have a neon sign on their lipsticks that says: “CONTAINS COW BRAINS”.

i mean, maybe for guys it’s not a big deal. But imagine, when you are shaving your face next time, you read the ingredients on the can and it says that one of the ingredients is um… um… the marrow from cows’ spinal cords or something. :bummer: Wouldn’t that make you hurl?

I don't know if it's normal or true. A few years back there was a rumour/story about there being aluminum or lead in Clinique lipsticks. I don't know whether that was true or not.

Anyway, you can get animal-friendly lipsticks from places like the Body Shop and even MAC lipsticks are against animal testing, so I figure there won't be any yucky ingredients in them.

Mehnaz, MAC lipsticks are not tested on animals ? Really?

i am switching over starting from today.

I'm pretty sure they aren't. Double check on their website.

i think you are right, they are mentioned on the above US-based website.

Ok, found the details. The cow brains, beign a part of the animal that's not consumed by humans in the West, is at the same time not allowed to simply be wasted (along with several other body organs that don't get eaten), as profit can be extracted from it.

These body material is heated in liquid to over 250 degrees C, at which point biological matter simply breaks down. Fats float to the top, where they get siphoned off and used in a variety of products, from lipstick to hairspray and soaps and shampoos and many other cosmetics.

As to why..... it's simply that these are the cheapest source of such fatty substances. the bad news, nadia, is that there is no way to be sure that the cosmetics don't contain fats derived from leftover pig parts. Certainly I know that with soaps, you can't even tell between one batch and another, as manufactures buy fats from the source that is cheapest at the time.

A synthetic fats manufacturer may have a special offer negotiated, which would mean the production one day would use artificial fats, but the next day, a manufacturer who derives fats from sources including pigs and horses may be able to offer it at a cheaper price, causing the next batch to use fats from the new source,. On day 3, production may start changing again because someone who extracts fats from cows and sheep can do an even better price, etc...

Thats why "kaein kaein" kartee rahtee hain larkiaan! :-|

Come on man, couldn't you come up with stuff like thongs made from pig intestines? Why does it always have to be lipstick, blush ons and mascara. *uck this.

Tekno, Sorry next time, just for you i will try to talk about thongs. Ab khush?

The level of interaction between the stuff on one's lips and what goes inside your mouth, is extremely close. People don't eat thongs, so i don't really care what thongs are made out of. People do inevitably swallow a little bit of the lipstick; can't help it cuz it's on the lips. i don't really care what thongs are made out of - unless someone plans on eating them.

Off-topic, but I can never resist correcting a factual inaccuracy.

Some companies do make edible things. Don't ask.

I would consider eating a thong. Come on guys. Change the subject. Lets talk about THONGS !!!!

Maddy, So technically speaking, cow brains could be present in shampoos as well?

Thanks for researching all that information; i do appreciate it.

:bummer:

In theory, there is a tiny tiny tiny risk that brain matter (as in, complex molecules rather than cells or tissues) may still be left in the cosmetic problems, adhering to the fats.

Plus what’s a mad scientist for, if not to research?

I guess what I should really make clear is that it's NOT cells of organic matter or tissues of organic matter that are in your cosmetics. You are dealing literally ONLY with complex organic molecules that don't break down at the temperatures at which rendering occurs.

So you won't be able to put lipstick under a powerful microscope and start seeing bundles of nerve fibres or brain matter. You would just, under the most powerful microscopes, see complex organic molecules suspended in the cosmetics.

aNadia, live a little, no one likes a frump.

i see. But these complex organic molecules are the building blocks based upon which those fats are developed, right?

The way you describe it, that it’s “not cells of organic matter” that are in the cosmetics, – it sounds a bit better. But then if that were the case, why would that individual in the article state there was a very, very minimal chance of transmitting mad cow disease onto humans - if it’s not organic cells?

It still sounds gross, but less gross now that you have explained it. Thanks for the research, Maddy. :k:

Matsui, For you, - alright  As long as you send me those flowers asap.
