What's happening in turkey?

Re: What's happening in turkey?

^ that's what I fear, it seems as if Syrian civil war is spilling into turkey. Hope I am wrong.

Re: What's happening in turkey?

Syria or its sectarian civil war is not the issue in Turkey at all. It is about Erdogan's increasingly socially intrusive policies, and people's dislike. It started on a petty issue but now the demonstrations have spread throughout Turkey. The government is defiant and using heavy handed tactics.

Re: What's happening in turkey?

i read an article about that park i think..let me share it...

Re: What's happening in turkey?

Re: What's happening in turkey?

The information in this article is so biased and false. Especially the part that says Erdogan has stated the decision is final about the shopping mall. There isn’t such thing at all. What kind of ''peaceful protesters'' would demolish everything that came in their way? Nowhere in Istanbul are there police officers right now, except in Besiktas near the Dolmabahce Palace. If someone would look through twitter or tumblr, they would think that the Police Officers are killing protesters, while in reality they aren't even there. There are so many false rumours going through the internet, I can’t believe how people can invent this all.

Please show me some examples of Erdogan’s socially intrusive policies.

Re: What's happening in turkey?

In the region they usually do not come without permission from the US and finance comes from Saudi Arab and recently Qatar has been very kind too.

Re: What's happening in turkey?

I'm not sure where you got your information from, but it's Gezi Park, not Ghazi Park. Gezi means 'sightseeing, walk' in Turkish.

Re: What's happening in turkey?

I see uncanny parallel to what happened in Pakistan after ZAB in 70s & subsequent down slide of the county to what Erdogan is doing in Turkey. In Pakistan, too, it all started with banning of alcohol to please right wingers & 40 years after where country is today. I hope the Turks are smarter than us.

Re: What's happening in turkey?

Saw pics of some actors from Turkish dramas among the protesters. :D

PS: Almiray, are you Turkish?

Re: What’s happening in turkey?

Hence proved:

Re: What’s happening in turkey?

To all the alcoholic Turkish protesters out there. Cheers!

Re: What's happening in turkey?

It was all boiling from couple of months, then came the alcohol ban and the development of ottoman era military barracks next to Taskim square.
that was it now all the younger generation is on the roads, but the sad part is police is using excessive force & PM Erdogan is still defiant and calling the protesters as "looters" & "alcoholics"

Istanbul Mayor already apologize by saying "we learnt the lesson" its certainly getting out of control i think Turkey political class should show some maturity and cool down the protesters, i don't want even in my wildest dreams to destroy the flight of Turkish economy ....

But it also proves that real democracy already taken root in the society of Turkey, they can come out and fight for their rights.

Re: What's happening in turkey?

Yes I am.

Just google Taksim Kislasi and you will see what it was like before. What the government wants to do now is, change the park and make it even greener. Everyone who has been to Taksim or lives there, knows what kind of nasty place that park is. Tourists can’t even go there because most people there are wandering drunk and making out there. You probably saw only one side of the media, that shows the ''peaceful protesters''. But in reality they are drunk, are drinking beer and throwing the bottles at the police officers. The same media doesn’t show how many Police officers are injured and how many shops, buses, cars etc. are ruined by the ''peaceful protesters''. Policemen are humans as well.

There is a reason why the Police acted in such way. The same day there was another huge protest in Istanbul against Israel. Why didn’t just one little thing occur between the Police officers and them? Because they didn’t demolish everything that came in their way.

Btw yesterday in Istanbul, there were Police officers in only one place, and that was near the Dolmabahce Palace. But what did the protesters do? They carried on demolishing everything.

Re: What's happening in turkey?

^ Thanks for telling the other side of the story. The news coming here in the US is totally one sided. American media gives a lot of coverage to riots/protests unless it's occupy wall street.

Re: What's happening in turkey?

Pakistan was already in shambles (split in half no less) by the time ZAB came into power, so there really is no comparison.

Turks were a former super power, and have only recenty (under Erdogan) fixed their economy. Politically, they were a mess until the 80's (military rule...like Paksitan).

Rest assured, the Turks are smarter than us.

Re: What's happening in turkey?

What's happening in Turkey is an effort to undermine democracy, by groups which feel frustrated at not being able to run the country the way they want to.

The demonstrators are from all non-AKP factions; factions which disagree which each other on every position other than disliking the AKP. Left-wingers, nationalists, Kurds, secularists, etc.

These opposing factions are still so fragmented as a result that Erdogan is still the most popular politician in the country, and the only one with an electorally won mandate to rule.

Bear in mind that these protests are largely limited to urban areas. The AKP gathers the majority of its support from the majority of Turks, who live in the countryside, away from protests. Opposition to the AKP has always focused on the cities, by contrast.

In this way, Turkey's protests mirror those of Egypt. The majority of Egypt's population support the Muslim Brotherhood, because they are conservative rural dwellers. People in the cities hate the Brotherhood, but are a minority of the country's population. However, they can easily get media attention because media focuses on population centres such as cities.
