Since yesterday there are processions in turkey? What are they about? Is turkey the next in this so called Arab spring?
Re: What's happening in turkey?
^Turks are upset that they can not buy alcohol at night with ease anymore.
Re: What's happening in turkey?
Most Turks are secular, and they don't like the increasingly Islamic look the Erdogan is giving to the country. Some examples I find on the net are, alcohol ban, being a dictator, and Turkey's involvement in Syrian conflict.
Basically, I think people do not like anyone be in power more than a decade. They get tired of seeing the same face. They want change.

Yes it seems as if the processions are being led by the seculars. It needs to be seen if the protests would die down or we have another Syria type uprising there.
Re: What's happening in turkey?
i think majority of turks are not secular ..if that was the case recep erdogon had no chance of being pm of turkey
Re: What’s happening in turkey?
probably they are agitating bad dubbing of their dramas in Pakistan ![]()
Re: What's happening in turkey?
Kemalists are protesting against the current government under the name of environmentalism. It has nothing to do with the environment but rather they got the chance to protest against the government, they can't let this opportunity slip away. These are not the majority of the Turks obviously but the Kemalists/secularists.
Re: What's happening in turkey?
^^^ The secularism is what made Turkey into what it is today...a major military and the economic power. Islamism would've turned into to Pakistan & Turks are rightly concerned about the direction this govt is taking their country.
Re: What’s happening in turkey?
that was forced secularism by attaturk…

if turk were so much in love with secularism then welfare party and now AKP never had a chance to win the elections…
and china is more developed than turkey so what do you prescribe for muslim countries?![]()

Do you know what the state of this country was when secularists were leading it?
Re: What's happening in turkey?

Its really simple. Separate religion from politics, respect human rights, individual freedoms and embrace democracy if you ever want to get out of the dark ages.

Secularism & running the country are 2 separate things. Secularism is an ideology & for running a country you need smart and strong leaders, but what you're forgetting is that encroaching on personal freedoms by this govt. Someday people of Turkey will regret that.

what personal freedom they encroached upon?

Many countries have outlawed alcohol in the past that had nothing to do with religion. The banning of alcohol is common sense if you look at its harms compared to drugs it is comparative. The country has democratically elected a leader who happens to be religious and that leader is using his democratic powers to put in place a policy that is for the good of the people. His personal motives may be religion and the criminalisation of alcohol makes good sense. Not so to the Liberals - who want to drink alcohol and become a burden to society.
We need to ask ourselves whether we are conflating liberalism with secularism ... and blaming a Muslim secular government with Islamic values for being non-democratic when in fact the protests are merely liberals vs conservatism.

They might be two separate things but it’s another story when the running leaders identify themselves as secularists. If we’re going to talk about encroaching personal freedoms, there are many other things that we should talk about. There has been a time that Turkish people weren’t allowed to own any Quran or religious book, what made them bury these in the ground or hide them in caves etc. There has been a time that whomever would say or write any Arabic word was jailed and tortured. Students who attended Islamic Education Schools were beaten up, students who wore a hijab have been beaten up. Guess what? This all happened when the secularist/Kemalist leaders were running the country. Talk about encroaching personal freedoms. And please give me some examples about restricting personal freedoms by this government.
Re: What's happening in turkey?
I've been following the news...it's not about secularism vs religion. It was about a park, the government wants to build a shopping mall while the protestors want the only park in Istanbul to remain as it is.

Oh please, likes of you would be calling for America to nuke Pakistan in a heartbeat if Pakistan leaders ever adopt the attitude Kemal had for Allied countries after the WW1, and yes, it was indeed that attitude and struggle for total independence that turned Turkey into what it is today. Mindless hate for Islam, Muslims and anything Islamic is completely irrelevant here.

Believe me it’s not about the park. Everything is done under the name of it. Almost everyone there identifies him/herself as a Kemalist. It isn’t even certain that there would come a shopping mall, nothing is certain but when some people heard this, they went all crazy and started protesting. Btw all that’s going to happen is that 12 trees would be replaced and everyone suddenly became an environmentalist. However the protestors in Taksim right now are all demonstrating against the current government and who they call ‘’Islamists’’. Half of them are drunk and don’t even know what they are doing.
Re: What's happening in turkey?
Damn it! I liked Turkey and Turkish people. I hope it doesn't turn into another Syria/Libya etc.
