^ Thanks for telling the other side of the story. The news coming here in the US is totally one sided. American media gives a lot of coverage to riots/protests unless it’s occupy wall street.

That’s true and not only the media in the US, believe me. Suddenly everyone loves Turks When I go through social media I see so many biased, false news and pictures. For example, there is a picture going all over the internet with many people on the bridge in Istanbul. The caption: ‘‘thousands of people are coming to Taksim’’, ‘‘this is Istanbul right now!!!’’, ‘‘the revolution has begun!!’’. While it’s a picture taken long time ago from the Eurasia Marathon. Just google Avrasya maratonu or Eurasia marathon to see it.

What’s happening in Turkey is an effort to undermine democracy, by groups which feel frustrated at not being able to run the country the way they want to.

The demonstrators are from all non-AKP factions; factions which disagree which each other on every position other than disliking the AKP. Left-wingers, nationalists, Kurds, secularists, etc.

These opposing factions are still so fragmented as a result that Erdogan is still the most popular politician in the country, and the only one with an electorally won mandate to rule.

Bear in mind that these protests are largely limited to urban areas. The AKP gathers the majority of its support from the majority of Turks, who live in the countryside, away from protests. Opposition to the AKP has always focused on the cities, by contrast.

In this way, Turkey’s protests mirror those of Egypt. The majority of Egypt’s population support the Muslim Brotherhood, because they are conservative rural dwellers. People in the cities hate the Brotherhood, but are a minority of the country’s population. However, they can easily get media attention because media focuses on population centres such as cities.

It’s true that everyone who’s against the AKP became one. But believe me if the population supporting the AKP would protest, even in Istanbul or in other big cities, they can come with numbers much more than those in Taksim etc. Just one word and there will be millions of them on the streets. But there’s no reason for doing that.
