Many countries have outlawed alcohol in the past that had nothing to do with religion. The banning of alcohol is common sense if you look at its harms compared to drugs it is comparative. The country has democratically elected a leader who happens to be religious and that leader is using his democratic powers to put in place a policy that is for the good of the people. His personal motives may be religion and the criminalisation of alcohol makes good sense. Not so to the Liberals - who want to drink alcohol and become a burden to society.

We need to ask ourselves whether we are conflating liberalism with secularism … and blaming a Muslim secular government with Islamic values for being non-democratic when in fact the protests are merely liberals vs conservatism.

I see uncanny parallel to what happened in Pakistan after ZAB in 70s & subsequent down slide of the county to what Erdogan is doing in Turkey. In Pakistan, too, it all started with banning of alcohol to please right wingers & 40 years after where country is today. I hope the Turks are smarter than us.
