Re: What’s a good brand for a laptop?
I have used, Toshiba 1 and 1/2 year, Compaq Presario 1 year, and Acer Travelmate 4402 for almost 8 months and I would say by far Acer is pretty good, I did my research, talk to my friends and get opinions like you have done. One thing I would advise is that dont go for the notebooks which most of the ppl say “Don’t by this one or buy that one” stay away from that. within your budget you can get alot of light weight 14’ or less screen size laptop.
The reason we buy notebook is portability, atleast that what I think, battery life of 3+ hours is a must for me, along with notebook being lightweight. IMO you should go and check the review on the following website for sure:
within your $$$ range
Toshiba and Acer are a tie
Asus and Hp comes 2nd and the rest to follow.
Re: What's a good brand for a laptop?
acer good? they are fatm heavy and noisy but cheapish. The better models like C range cost around £1k list price. You get what you pay for simply. if money is no object get a IBM T60p
Toshiab are on the borderline of durabilaty and price, better than budget brands such as acer, dell but not the BEST quality either.
Re: What's a good brand for a laptop?
^^ In what age are you living? if you say Acer are fatm heavy/noisy, certainly you need to visit a pc shop and see the TravelMate and Ferrari brand, if you haven't.
what durability borderline, do you want to play catch-up on the weekend. I have used my notebook (Yes its Acer) in college and at work as well, it has gone through daily use (wear and tear) but its still good. Yes your point is well stated "if $$$ is no object" if that is the case I'd go for the rugged Panasonic, Top of the line.
Re: What's a good brand for a laptop?
panasonic's consumer divison pc's are not all that rugged. only those destined for military and engineers. Infact their is a wholeworld of computers you probabaly have never seen or know about becuase not marketed at you.
I said MOST acer foo, not ALL.
I suggest you get out of stupid PC shops that will happily say this is the best thing since dinosaurs.
I have repaired hundreds of laptops, sold the basteds to ppl like you, used them for god knows how long. Crappy companies like acer more than happy to pay me extra for recomending their ****ty brand.
Ferrari is a load of crap in a nice looking case, engine sound at startup who cares?
Travelmate is a load of **** unless you oay £900+ then not very good value for money
Borderline, i suggest you read up on how comapies work. It's all about using linear lagebra to maximise profits. Whats the best point between taking shortcuts and warranty costs.... go figure
Re: What's a good brand for a laptop?
hey cant be arsed designing a new laptop, = new components, new chasis etc... for each new model. So what acer do is use the same base setup and add the new stuff. Thats why they are fat cunts. Noisy becuasedont use heat exchange solutions for the equal thermal wattage, more is ok less is a problem. Stick ona big fan and it should be ok for all.
I suggest you go to your pc shop and look at a IBM t60p, see the difference. As it comes with 4 years on site warranty quality has to be MUCH better or their repair bill goes up. Again it's about whats best for lenovo. Ooops ****ty pc shop wont stock the t series. Not targeted at stupid £50 off public. Maybe wif you join the big bad world of corporate employent your employer may give you one.
Re: What's a good brand for a laptop?
I have a Sony Vaio, and the only problem I have is surfing the net too much :D
Re: What’s a good brand for a laptop?

Re: What’s a good brand for a laptop?
I came across HP dv2040ca. It looks fantastic (at least the appearance) and fits the budget ($1000CAD) and specs (5.3lbs & 14.1").
The only problem is Staples only has the display model remaining. I’m not sure how wise it would be to get a display model. I was told I would be given some discount on some sort of warranty. Also, unlike other stores they are not offering an upgrade to Vista early next year.
Would it be wise to go for it?

Re: What’s a good brand for a laptop?

Do you think you will need Vista?
other then that, its a good machine. I like HP’s. They never stop working. I dropped mine several times and its still almost without scratches :k:
The Hardware is ok. I doubt you will need more highend hardware.
p.s. You could try to get more discount because they dont have Vista vouchers and other stores do.
Or maybe they can thrown in a mouse and laptop bag. Or a cheap printer? ![]()
Re: What's a good brand for a laptop?
lol.. I know I've taken a while, but I think I'm close to making a decision. I love the way the machine looks. Just that it's a display model and no Vista option, so I'm a little hesitant.
Thanks for the idea about a few extra items to ask for. If they gimme the warranty for free or throw in a bag or a printer, I might go for it.
Vista doesn't mean as much, but then again the new computers these days are offering the software for free granted you pay S&H.
Re: What's a good brand for a laptop?
The notebook you mentioned above is a good one, but since you are in no hurry to purchase the notebook wait for the "Boxing day Sale". if you need it soon then go and ask for computer sale manager @ Staples and ask him to throw in some freebie's; warranty or notebook bag with Av...etc.
Re: What's a good brand for a laptop?
If u have not bought it yet....wait till Thanksgiving. You will see market floated with cheaper laptops after blackfriday!
Re: What’s a good brand for a laptop?
/\ And by that time some one else will advice her to wait again because next year april AMD will introduce something new. And next year june some one else will advice the same again ![]()
Re: What's a good brand for a laptop?
I'd like to sincerely thank you all for putting up with my endless questions. I've finally purchased HP Pavilion dv2120ca.
Specs:
AMD Turion 64 X2 Dual Core...
1024MB system memory
8X DVD R/RW
NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150 graphics with shared video memory
I got what I wanted in terms of looks, screen size (14.1"), and weight (approx. .3 lbs or so).
I was able to get a brand new one from BestBuy.
