I’m looking for a reasonable, light weight notebook. I’d primarily be using it for school related purposes and to surf the net. I’m not into playing games or anything of that sort.

I have a Toshiba right now, which I very much like, but I find it heavy to carry in my backpack.

I’ve come across Acer, Gateway, HP, Compaq, Toshiba and Sony. How reliable are these brands (exclusing Toshiba) and would they last me 3-4 years?

I’ve had extended warranty on Toshiba, which was helpful, but I hardly used it. Would it be advisable to go for extended warranty?

I had this discussion with a guppy on MSN. I thought I’d ask around a little more before making a final decision.

I’m looking for something between $1000-$1500 (CAD).

I initially started a thread in Bazaar Talk, but given that there was absolutely no feedback I thought I’d try my luck here.

Sadiyan, congratulations. Specs look nice. I would have suggested going for IBM which are leader in coroporate secrots NOT for their aesthetic appeal (they all look alike) but their reliability, light weight and portability.

I myself have two laptops, one thinkpad from IBM and one Toshiba multimedia laptop which is a perfect desktop replacement. bought it recently and totally loving it.

Saby, aethetics mattered. Hence, I went with AMD Turion 64 X2, otherwise I could've gotten Centrino Core 2 Duo for a similar price range.

I think IBM was still a little pricey. Perhaps next time. :)

Download a copy of Sisoft Sandra and run some speed tests on it.

I think IBM T60 in Duel Core. But this will cast you expensive.

Tofi, thank you. Sisoft Sandra is not a freeware. :(

Upping the memory sounds like a good idea, but I'm completely drained. I suppose I'll have it upgraded in the next few years.
