Don't forget Acer. That's one brand that's not as well advertised and has been offering really good prices. Core duo with 1 gb ram at about $890. U can't beat that anywhere.

what's up with avaratec? because i've seen the non-normal, non-mac laptops, which are white, and smaller, and i'm assuming that avartec makes those. so any good?

my laptop is toshiba and I will also recommend that because its better then Acer.

Apples are good and funny. plus it will keep the doctor away:)
however my experience has been very good with the dell. this is my second laptop in a row and this baby has been working fine for the last three years. my brother bought a gateway and it was *; another one bought an HP and it was * too .
my recommendation in any kind of computer is always a dell.
a printer should always be an HP.

i just bought a tobisha laptop, paid 1100 for the laptop itself, a printer scanner 2 in 1, a wireless router, 5 yr extended warrnaty....all tax included...im totally loving it, but yeah the weights becoming an issue..but wtv i;ll deal with it

I apologize for reviving this thread, but I haven’t made up my mind yet. I was at Sony store today and their laptops are gorgeous! :love:
I was told, however by a individuals not to go for Sony due to reliability issues.
Now that Core Duo and Core 2 Duo are both available. Does it matter if I go with Core Duo and save a few bucks or is it not worth it?
In terms of Dell, I have the following two notebooks in mind:
**Inspiron 640m **
-the screen size (14.1") seems good, but I think the casing itself is somewhat flimsy (basing it on Inspiron 6400’s casing).

XPS M1210
-very portable and certainly lighter than Inspiron 640m. The screen size is 12.1". I was hoping for a 13.1", but Dell doesn’t offer it. The only concern I have is would I end up hating it or get tired of the small screen size? Any personal experiences with this notebook?

Toshiba’s pretty much is out of the picture now because they’re usually heavier. Compaq is a little fat. HP, I’m not too sure about. I don’t see myself too inclined toward Acer or Gateway, unless there’s a very good reason for it.

dont go for a dell yo... piece of SHiz... i work for Geek Squad ova hea in NJ n we get more dell desktops/laptops den any other computers..... these days dell is makin the worse systems eva...Hard drives are the biggest issues.. i would say forget abt dell... go for either sony... or toshiba... ... toshiba jz came out wid a 14" laptop.... wid intel centrino duo and a gig of ram in there.. its a pretty decent system.. not dat heavy either...

Go with Sony, u'll never go wrong. They may be a little bit pricey for the right model but u'd be happy with the decision.

Why is there such a huge difference in opinions? Why is it that some are so much against Sony and Dell, while others are in favour of it?

with dell, it just depends on their series. their inspirons are kinda bad. but dell latitudes are pretty good.
having worked with both dell and sony, both have had their share of issues. a friend's toshiba has been going good for three years...but another friends toshiba has been having issues.
with a laptop, u can't ever guarantee which brand is good..which isn't...hence the wide range of opinion.... mainly because, all the components are soo small and integrated inside..they are bound to fail because of the heat dissipated inside.
laptops have a life, if you use it sparingly..it will go on for a long time..if u use it alot, it will die out quicker. my hp laptop died after one and a half years because it was on 24/7. but i've seen hp's work brilliantly for other people.
Just get the one that fits your specs and is the cheapest. you might want to look into getting extended warranty coverage to give you a peace of mind.

HP is the best. model no pavilian dv1000. the hp one is for my business but i would recommend you my other one which i use for gupshup browsing and school work. this laptop toshiba qosmio is the best of the best. 160gb hard disk cool graphics and everything but it will not fit into your budget, i got it for 14000 dirhams. another good laptop is dell xps but that is out of your budget as well. dv1000 is 9000 dirhams, i dont know how much that is in dollars.

I won't be purchasing an extended warranty this time around. I did last time and it did come in handy, but I want to keep my budget low.
Also Toshiba Qosmio (sp?) would be too heavy.

Qosmio very heavy.I have always bought IBm as quality the best. parts easily availale to. Can costmore but you are getting quality on every component.I still have a perfectly working IBM X24 and at the moment using a old IBM T40p which was very pricey but still has better specon items likescreen, keyabord HD then new offerings now.
