Dav Whatmore remains top of Pakistan’s coaching wish list as the search to replace the late Bob Woolmer enters its final stages. A three-man board committee has shortlisted 13 names from the many who applied. The names will be discussed at the next ad-hoc committee meeting of the board in mid-June and a final decision is still likely to be made by July 1.
Whatmore, who has just completed a four-year tenure with Bangladesh, is also thought to be a leading contender for the vacant Indian coaching post, though he has downplayed speculation that the deal is all but sealed. Cricinfo has learnt, however, that Pakistan are still interested if Whatmore does not go to India.
“He is our top choice but it will depend on how the India thing plays out,” an official told Cricinfo. “India will probably be able to offer him more money but also probably twice the stress as in Pakistan.” It is not known whether Whatmore applied formally for the position, which the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) advertised on its website in April.
Contact between the two parties has been acknowledged; Nasim Ashraf, chairman PCB, revealed earlier this month that the board had been in touch with Whatmore. Speaking to BBC soon after, Whatmore said, “I have not been formally approached by them. Somebody spoke to me on their behalf during the World Cup asking for my contact details but I have not heard from them since.”
Whoever is eventually appointed, it is increasingly likely to be from outside Pakistan. Officials privately conceding that a local with requisite qualifications is not only rare, but prone to getting embroiled in internal politics within the team. “It has happened before with local coaches where there have been personality clashes and cliques being formed so it would be better to avoid that and get someone in without any vested interests,” one official said.
Ashraf, however, stressed to Cricinfo that applications have come from locals as well as from England and Australia. “It is more important that he is suited to the job than what his nationality is. Ideally, we are looking for someone young, computer-literate and with fresh ideas. It need not be a big name. Someone without international experience, who is hungry and motivated to take on a challenge and prove himself internationally would be an option as well.”
Tim Boon, the Leicestershire coach, has been linked with the position as was, at one stage last year, John Wright. A PTI report, quoting board sources, says that West Indians Roger Harper and Jimmy Adams have also applied. Though a decision is expected by July 1, Ashraf has reiterated that “there will be no hurry to make the decision and it has to be the right man.”

Re: Whatmore tops Pakistan’s wish list
He really got the best out of Bangladesh as their coach. I hope he does it for Pakistan as well. By the way anyone knows where he is from
?
Re: Whatmore tops Pakistan's wish list
^ Whatmore is a Lanka-born Australian.
It's getting interesting from hereon. I do not see any real chance of Whatmore turning down Indian offer. And the way he has shown his kneeness to coach India, I don't know how feasible it will be to assign him the Pak duty. Nevertheless, he has credentials to be wished for.
As far as I could read the mind of the chairman and the hints that are coming from its setup, I think it's going to be Tim Boon.
Re: Whatmore tops Pakistan's wish list
I am beginning to rethink my support for Whatmore as India's coach.
I mean what kind of Coach advises the Captain to bowl first on a track like in the just concluded Test Match. Also, his public moonlighting for India's job (though understandable in parts) has not been a great advertisement for his professionalism.
As far as the latest news about his being in the line to be Pak's coach, here's my theory :
I think we can all agree that Whatmore's first choice is/was India...and I think his being the next Indian Coach was a done deal until a week ago...so he had outrightly rejected Pak's overtures. But something went awry in his negotiations with the Indian Board last week. Something seems to have made the Indian board rethink about him. Meanwhile, Whatmore - sensing that the India opportunity may be in jeopardy - has let the Pak board know that he has not totally closed the door on them. So he is back to being in the running for Pak's coach.
Of course, the above is purely my "theory".

Re: Whatmore tops Pakistan's wish list
I personally think that Whatmore is a little over-rated. Although he needs to be given credit for the way the Bangladesh team has progressed over the last few years, there was a lot more going on behind the scenes. The BCB has invested a lot in overhauling its domestic cricket infrastructure with the help of consultants from Cricket Australia. I was just watching a documentary on how the new structure of cricket in the country has produced cricketers who’ve already made it to the national team. Tamim Iqbal is a prime example.
Also, apparently, there investment’s medium term goal is to have 60 contractual cricket players competing for spots in the national team and they expect to reach this stage sometime by 2010.
Pretty sound investment for a long-term strategy I say… I wish the PCB would learn from them and do something about their infrastructure. Imran Khan has been talking about this for ages now.
Re: Whatmore tops Pakistan's wish list
I think everyone misread the pitch. The curator had left some grass on the pitch, and before the game, the commentators were actually predicting that the team winning the toss would bowl first. Another story that the same guys changed their tune pretty quickly.
In any case, tough to judge a man's career on one call. I remember Dravid making big howlers at least two times - misreads of the pitch that cost India the game each time. Stuff happens. Whatmore is a good coach - when you look at his entire body of work, it is pretty impressive. Of all the options being thrown around, I think he is head and shoulders above all. The thought of Madan Lal as the next coach does not really inspire much joy.
Agree with your theory on Whatmore news leaks though - daal main zaroor kuch kaala hai. Gavaskar's public comments are probably what spooked Whatmore. Gavaskar (supposedly plugging bro-in-law Vishy) and Kapil (Madan) are heading up the swadeshi lobby. Dravid, Tendlya, Gangu and Kumble supposedly met with Powar and made a case for a foreign coach though. Think Whatmore will be selected in the end. If not, India's loss, and Pak's gain.
I am beginning to rethink my support for Whatmore as India's coach. I mean what kind of Coach advises the Captain to bowl first on a track like in the just concluded Test Match. Also, his public moonlighting for India's job (though understandable in parts) has not been a great advertisement for his professionalism.

No one can coach the Indian team.. Atleast the Pakistani team is good and bad- like everything else it has highs and lows but Indian team can't perform when's it needed most and once they lose badly like they did in the world cup, they silence everyone by winning against teams like Bangladesh/Zimbabwe. Dav Whatmore will be a failure as the Indian coach :) The players are soo lazy and unathletic that they can't even play carrom :D

I hope he is not picked as coach for Pakistan. The way he behaved during the world cup making his wish known to coach India while his team was still in the world cup shows lack of professionalism.

I believe Duncan Fletcher is looking for work.

More coaches have been considered by Pakistan than players that have made debut in recent times. ![]()
Rixon considered for Pakistan role.
http://content-www.cricinfo.com/ci/content/story/296351.html?CMP=OTC-RSS
Steve Rixon, the former Australia wicketkeeper, has been sounded out as a potential coach of Pakistan. However, Rixon said the unexplained death of Bob Woolmer had left him in doubt whether he wanted the job and he has not officially applied.
Pakistan’s board was reportedly impressed by Rixon’s successful stretch as New Zealand’s coach from 1996 to 1999, and specifically his work with the captain Stephen Fleming. Rixon said whether he put in for the Pakistan position might depend on what police uncovered about Woolmer’s death in Jamaica at the World Cup.
“They [Pakistan] have made contact with me, I have spoken to them,” Rixon told Cricinfo. “I haven’t indicated whether I’m interested yet. I’m finding it extremely hard to get over the fact Bob Woolmer is no longer with us, to be honest. I’d never say never, but I’ll be interested in the results of the inquiry.”
As well as Pakistan, there are still senior coaching vacancies in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Without naming specific nations, Rixon confirmed he had “spoken to a few different countries” but had not committed to applying for any of the roles.
Rixon, who is based in Sydney, said coaching on the subcontinent would be a very different challenge, if he chose to pursue it. “It’s something that’s not grabbing me and saying ‘you’ve got to come and do it’,” Rixon said of a potential move to Asia. “But who knows? This interest might be the spark that gets me there.”
Rixon spent two years at the helm of Surrey from 2004-05 and has also had two separate stints as the coach of New South Wales. He hoped to return to the international ranks as John Buchanan’s replacement this year, although Australia instead chose Tim Nielsen.

He probably wants to use Pakistan for bargaining his demands with BCCI.

Yes Rixon is concerned and scared.

do you mean that he wrote the book?
