Whatmore ‘ready’ if offered India job

Dav Whatmore, the Bangladesh coach, says he has had “positive discussions” with Ravi Shastri, the Indian cricket manager, about the prospect of his taking the India job when his term with Bangladesh ends after the ongoing two-Test series.

“I had a short discussion with Ravi about taking up the job of coaching India and I have spoken in the affirmative,” Whatmore told PTI. “The discussion centered round how interested I am. I am satisfied with the initial discussion. We are both satisfied. **All I can say is I am ready for the challenge if the opportunity comes. I am ready to sink my teeth into the problems and find out a solution as the BCCI would want me to.” **

Six high-ranking BCCI officials, including president Sharad Pawar and secretary Niranjan Shah, were scheduled to arrive in Chittagong on Saturday to hold discussions with Whatmore.

India is one of the toughest coaching assignments with the publicity and the expectations but Whatmore said he was capable of working with ‘star’ players. "It’s a question of man-management and how far one wants to take ones career forward and I have to deal with them individually if and when the time comes.

"I have had star material [to work with] always. When I coached Lancashire the first season was a disaster, but the second season was the best the county had in their entire cricketing history. And both the seasons they had nine of the England team players in the side and three overseas players who were stars too.

“Sri Lanka had players like Aravinda de Silva, Arjuna Ranatunga and [Asanka] Gurusinghe. They were big stars in their country. But I never found it difficult to handle them. What we tried to do was [ensure] that the practice sessions were meaningful. The tactical part was taken care of. The team meetings were exciting and vibrant. I was not the only one talking. That’s the whole idea.”

I don’t know how accurate is this news since I haven’t seen it anywhere else but it was in Times of India on May 16.

Whatmore declines PCB’s offer to coach team

**NEW DELHI, May 16: **The outgoing Bangladesh coach Dav Whatmore has rejected Pakistan Cricket Board’s offer to coach their side.

Sources close to the Australian said that he declined the offer on the pretext that Pakistan is an indiscipline side.

However, the Australian has shown interest to coach Team India.

Earlier, the Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Nasim Ashraf had said that negotiations are on with Whatmore to take over the job, left vacant by the death of Pakistan cricket coach Bob Woolmer.

“PCB is in contact with Whatmore. Our negotiations are underway, and whenever something is finalised, it will be made public,” Ashraf was quoted, as saying by the *Daily Times *.

Re: Whatmore 'ready' if offered India job

this news is accurate as the following statement: "Pcb shows interest in Whatmore" and "Whatmore ready if Bcci offer him the position of Indian coach"

and on a serious note, this is turning out to be the highest bidder auction and to be honest Pakistan should keep their options open, there are other good coaches (domestic and International).

Re: Whatmore ‘ready’ if offered India job

some “unknown” coach is going to do wonders for pak .. who needs Whatmoore:halo:

Re: Whatmore 'ready' if offered India job

The prospective coach for Pak must undergo a thorough medical check up - blood pressure, heart diseases, diabetes etc.
On a related note, imagine Mark Trescothick coaching Pak. The guy does not know what STRESS really is yet.

BCCI top brass travel to Bangladesh

May 17, 2007

Six top officials of the Indian board (BCCI), led by its president Sharad Pawar, are arriving in Chittagong on Saturday. This visit assumes significance in the face of speculation that Dav Whatmore, the outgoing coach of Bangladesh, is favoured to take over the role of India's coach.
A top Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) official in Chittagong confirmed that he received a fax from the BCCI about the visit on Wednesday. "I have received a fax from the BCCI saying that their six officials are coming to Chittagong on Saturday on a day's visit," Sirajuddin Mohammed Alamgir, a member of the executive committee, said. "The fax does not mention the names of all six members, only that the team would be headed by Pawar. But I am told that BCCI Secretary Niranjan Shah, Vice-President Lalit Modi and former BCCI president IS Bindra are also coming, all in a private helicopter from Mumbai."
He said the BCCI officials' itinerary was not mentioned in the fax.

** Whatmore, who stepped down as Bangladesh's coach last month and has drawn some criticism from the country's cricket board, has already refused an offer to take over the reins of the Pakistan team.

**-cricinfo reporting it, so looks like whatmore has refused to coach pakistan

Re: Whatmore 'ready' if offered India job

I always wanted Whatmore as coach of Pakistan but the way he behaved during the WC, announcing that he wanted to coach India when his own team was still in the world cup shows the shallow side of him. I wouldn't want him to be Pakistan's coach now. The guy has no morals. He could have at least kept quite till his team was out of the world cup or sent a secret message to the Indian board that he was interested. He comes across as a money grabbing leach.

Re: Whatmore 'ready' if offered India job

^Khisayaani billi khamba noche

*Angoor khatte hain...*also comes to mind.

Re: Whatmore 'ready' if offered India job

^ Absolutely not. This guy will ditch India in the middle of the series and go to Australia if he was offered the job. Yes he is good, but not indispensable. So enjoy him. I came to that conclusion the day he made his wishes known right in the middle of the WC. He is after the money not the challenge, so good luck. Will send you some grapes later on when he ditches your team.

Re: Whatmore 'ready' if offered India job

Frankly speaking, I do not think Whatmore will bring about any dramatic improvements in the fortunes of the Indian team. I would much rather have Shastri continue on (and not because we just defeated mighty BD 2-0). Shastri appears to be very insightful and analytical (from his commentary)....and being a desi himself - would know how to get the best out of Desis.
But when you have the kind of money (like BCCI does), you look to spend it on status symbols - and hiring Whatmore appears to be one of them.

Re: Whatmore 'ready' if offered India job

Some1, not really.
he has this lust for India job and it was very apparent when he made a fool out of himself in the WC. I even read somewhere that he declined pakistan job because he thinks our team is "indisciplined". While i might agree with that claim but it seems like he is not up for a challenge and wants easy wins and FAME. He knows that india is gonna bounce back and he wants to add the free wins to his name. For Pak, i would want someone who takes pride in improving a team and has the right morals. Whatmore scores very low on the morals atleast.

Re: Whatmore 'ready' if offered India job

Speaking of defeating mighty Bangladesh. India desparatly need to form a new startegy for winning one day games. Those two games would have gone Bangladesh's way, first if Habib had scored 10 runs and second if the openers haven't been run out. Mortaza smashed four successive sixes, which shows that India has limited options for winning one day games, mainly their star players.

New coach, whoever he is need to focus on new kids, they are your future and let the fading Legends fade away. Give new kid the chance to win you game, they are the reason India can be the contendor for next World Cup. So, main job of new coach, be it Whatmore, would be to tell the seniors that they are not the focal point any more.

Re: Whatmore 'ready' if offered India job

About Whatmore, I think since Bangladesh's recent emergence, he has become hungry for media attention. Just my opinion.

Re: Whatmore 'ready' if offered India job

Well, one would think there is great competition between the handful of coaches at the international stage....and for an international Coach looking for a job, it is not like there are 20-30 teams to choose from. When one is looking to move (like Whatmore was), and a very lucrative opportunity suddenly springs up (Chappel had already resigned during the WC), one would be expected to do what Whatmore did (make his candidature known). Also, I would like to think he went public in the midst of the WC because he did not really expect BD to last very long in the WC anyway....and his contract was up for renewal after the WC.

In conclusion, Whatmore did not win any bonus points by doing what he did - but in my opinion there is some justification for it.

Re: Whatmore 'ready' if offered India job

Some1

You wrote just after Indian World Cup's exit that team does not have any better players who can over take. Do you still think that new kids can not get the job done? If BCCI can take the senior mafia out, India can climb up in rankings.

Re: Whatmore 'ready' if offered India job

True, all I am saying is that he could have achieved the same results by quiet diplomacy rather than shouting from the roof tops that he was keen to coach India when he was still incharge of a team which was in the WC.

Re: Whatmore 'ready' if offered India job

Real talents (both in bowling and batting) continue to be scarce in Indian domestic Cricket. As I have said many times before.....there appears to be no future Dravid or future Tendulkar or even future Srinath or Kumble waiting to be picked (Piyush Chawla is an interesting prospect though). The selectors, therefore, continue to recycle the same "tested and failed" players...Gambhir, VRV, RP Singh, Uthappa, Mongia etc. In these circumstances, I doubt that if the "senior mafia" (as you put it) were gotten rid of, India can easily climb the World Rankings.

Also, I personally feel that a Coach's role is sometimes overstated. No coach can make an Akram out of Agarkar. At the end of the day, there also has to be "real" talents in the team...no matter who the Coach is.

Re: Whatmore 'ready' if offered India job

Whatmore looks like a desi too. Honestly, dress him up in a kurta pajama or a shalwar qameez and doesn't he look like Mehmood Butt saahab who would feast on siri paaye and qulcha naan every morning for breakfast?

Re: Whatmore 'ready' if offered India job

^ yes true :D
