What would you do?

So one of our employees who happens to bring in the highest volume of business is planning on leaving the company because he believes he isn’t getting enough commission. He had to argue to get what he is now getting which is lower than what he was getting at his previous job. I know that losing him will be a blow to the company but what I don;t know is if I should tell my boss about it or not. I did advise the guy to talk to the boss about raising his commission and sort of forewarn him so boss knows of the consequences but he doesn;t want to go that route and just quit on a very short notice. If I tell boss about it, the guy will surely know that I am the one who passed on the info and I don;t want to break his trust. At the same time I don’t want the guy to leave the company. Part of my salary is commission too, which depends upon how much business comes in  Personal reasons aside and my occasional bouts of hate for my boss aside too, i’ll feel bad if poor boss loses one of his best business producers without a single clue.

What would u do? Tell boss or not?

Re: What would you do?

I have a feeling that the guy is passing empty threats and won't leave; maybe just venting out his frustration.

Re: What would you do?

Give me ur boss's email & I'll send him an email that his best employee is planning to leave because of less commissioned paid.

Re: What would you do?

If you care about the company and your boss, you should let the boss know so he is mentally prepared to make other arrangements if the employee decides to leave. The guy himself needs to approach the boss if he wants to negotiate and work out some deal.

Employees come and go all the time. At the time it seems like a major set back but once they leave things do go on and others just have to step up to pull some more weight. We have been through this several times over the years and now it doesn't matter who goes, things continue on and sometimes for the better.

BTW, what kind of work do you guys do?

Re: What would you do?

In the mortgage business. At a time when the mortgage industry isn;t exactly booming, losing one of ur few employees who still manage to bring in good business would be quite a setback. Maybe I should just try to talk to the guy again. I mean we do get a lot of leeway here so its not so bad a place to be working at. But even a 5% difference in commission can be a whole lot. Maybe I could somehow safely pass a hint to the boss. Dunno

Re: What would you do?

Good to know. I've recently given couple of people in your area reference to a mortgage company I've dealt with in the past. Pehle pata hota tau aap ka bhee as a 2nd reference de deta.

Re: What would you do?

the client is going to leave regardless of whether u tell your boss or not right? if you tell your boss he will leave angrier though....

also you said he doesnt want to talk to the boss....seems like he just wants out. will telling your boss make such a big difference?

Re: What would you do?

FF,
Business 101. Your show loyalty to yourself and the greenback. Dont ever-- and i mean ever--have any loyalty for your company. They dont care two shyts about you. So, fcuk the boss. If this guy brings in a lot of commission and that trickles down to you, then keep contact with the guy and jump ship if it means mo' money for you. Or, if you think backstabbing the guy will translate into more money for you from your boss, then do so by all means. Bottomline: follow the money, and screw everyone else. That's the only way to get ahead in life.

Hint: If the guy is making less than what he made at this previous job, then it is quite obvious you are underpaid, too.

Re: What would you do?

^ Hey is eco 100 the same as business 101?

Re: What would you do?

There is no question about me being underpaid! But lets leave that aside for the time being. His leaving does affect my paycheck and yes that is one of my concerns too. Without commission my paycheck isn;t exactly pretty.
Sweets im just thinking that maybe if boss knows that he may lose the guy he might stop being a miser and give the guy an increment, afterall he is an asset to the company.

Najim thanks for ur kind offer but that would be the start of a lot more gossip considering I am the only staff member who knows of his intention and the question would arise... ye najim femme ka kya lagta hei jo uss tak baat pohnchi...socho zara!

AK vaisay u never know. The guy missed a very good opportunity in the past and regrets it till today. So if another comes his way he may very well take it up. Can't say really.

Re: What would you do?

AGREED!

Worry about yourself the hell with everyone else. Keep your ears open and your mouth shut. Do you work i would even try to get contacts from the guy who is leaving. Learn few things here and there. Once the guy leaves after a month ask your boss for the raise. Claim you are taking more burden almost doing work of two people. :~)

Its a race we all want whats best for us. I am sure he is getting something alot better thats why he is leaving :~)

May be time for you to move up a little as well. I would even try to negotiate commission with my boss as well.

Re: What would you do?

Lets leave me and my pay aside Nia. I know why I am here and for how long too

Re: What would you do?

boss kay tatoo murdabad!!!!!

Re: What would you do?

lol gabru. Oye tum abhi bhi ho!

Re: What would you do?

yeah but its tricky. your boss might/might not pay him more. in case you do tell your boss: if i was in the employees place i would personally feel kinda embarassed....with someone else telling my boss the reason behind my departure. the guy should negotiate himself, period. i think in office matters it is best not to get involved in other people's issues (unless your boss is a relative lolz)

Re: What would you do?

housing is going down the tube anyway.. let him leave.. he'll be back wagging his tail obediently..

Re: What would you do?

na, i woudlnt tell the boss..

one of my colleagues is leaving too (same reasons pretty much) and i knew about it too... the boss is having a hard time finding a replacement.. but thats his loss...he should have been paying him accordingly... infact we're all underpaid!

Re: What would you do?

Is it the same company where some lady who you were sharing the office with smelled funny?

Let the guy leave and take over all his clients. You can then become the next employee bringing in the largest volume of business to the firm. :k:

Re: What would you do?

That was DiscoDuck I think, my assistant had bad breath and she left a while ago. The new one is a cutie and totally submissive.

True I think I just shouldn;t interfere.

Re: What would you do?

I think you need to saty out of this issue completely. It is between him and your boss....let him handle it the way he wants to. You do not need to tell the boss anything. Nothing good will come out of you telling the boss....
