I recall reading a story like this a few years ago (the incident took place in the UK or US, I can’t remember). The amount wasn’t as high as a million, it was in the tens or hundreds of thousands. The person withdrew the money and spent it.

A few weeks later the bank identified the error. When they contacted the person and found that the money had been spent, they had the person arrested for theft.

At the trial, the bank successfully argues that the person knew that they were not supposed to have had the money but took it anyway, and had them sent to jail for a few years.

ahh the good old days when people were the ones stealing money from banks, and not vice versa..
